Hey, guys, whats up. I have an 87 Ranger STX, 2.9L bored .20 over. i was reading through the tech forums and i saw the air intake topic. Is it worth removing the air box? will i get the promised 10hp increase from K&N?

This would greatly help!! Oh and by the way, half the reason i asked is because I have to work on a tight budget lol

no.. any extra money w/out MAJOR work is useless on the 2.9.

i spent some money on my 2.9, and the best thing i EVER did to the 2.9 was replace it w/ the 4.0.

+1

10hp with just an air filter? more like 1-2 at most. a 2.9 wouldn't know what to do with the extra air, especially with a MAP setup. air is best if its sucked in from outside the engine bay, too much warm air inside, cold air is what makes it better. cold air=more dense

another Arkansasn eh? what part ya from?

Already there. If you are on a tight budget I wouldn't waste your money.

The intake on the truck is already a cold air intake. It connects right to the grill (practically) and runs up into the filter housing.

IMHO...There's no point.

Oh and nice truck! Looks good in your Avatar. Welcome!

I would spend the money on a budget boost or interior or axles (8.8 d35 swap)... Or others. Depends on what you want out of your truck.

i put one of those cheap ass cone filters from pep boys on my 2.9, makes a world of difference IMO. much faster acceleration. it sucks in hot air, but i dont care. i'm gonna redo it once i get the lift/exhaust on and get an inline filter to suck in air from the cabin.

it's a $20 filter, i wouldnt spend a dime more on a fancy intake for the 2.9

I can also say not worth it if your on a tight budget.

I put headers, full catback exhaust and an air filter set up to notice nothing more then a sound change and just slightly more pick up.

Unless your willing to do a computer swap with a later 2.9 for the MAF setup, and a complete port match and polish, you wont notice much at all.

one thing i decided to do is take that hose that goes from the bottom of the air box to the casing around the exhaust (warm air intake?) off and made the supposed cold air intake it comes stock with a real COLD air intake

Your better off with warm air in winter...mine runs better when I block off the hole behind the grill in winter and I have the same air filter 88_Eddie has. The one I got is a 3" so I clamped it onto the outside of the air intake tube and the filter sits in the bottom of the old air box. These adds for adding horsepower all say ADDS UP TO. I agree with Eddie that it does help but I wouldn't pay a lot for what it does add. I got mine cause my stock filter lid was broken when I got it and the cone filter was only $20.
