air compresser wiring question

bought a sears 5 horse electric compresser sat. for $20.i bought it for the tank mainly,its missing the regulator switch but other than that its comlete and not in bad shape.
you can wire it 110 or 220.as far as i know its set for 110....
i want to run this thing without the reg. just to see if it all works(i thought what the hell its in pretty good shape)
a reg. from sears is over $50 and i want to make sure the motor and comp. still work before i put anymore $ in it..........heres the question:
green-black-white coming in to where the switch was from plug
green-black-white going out to motor.i connected black to black white to white with 15 amp fuses....plugged it in to 110 and both fuses popped....
motor fried?
comp. and motor turn freely....................any help would be great!

there should be a plate on the motor that has the wiring diagam on it.

i know where that one is for the motor to do the 220v flip.......thanks for the reply

take a multi meter and check the motor for a short. There should be quite a bit of resistance there. IDK how much exactly, some one else will probably chime in on that.

Are the Capacitors still on the motor? alot of the larger 5 Hp motors are cap start motors and with out them you will blow fuses.

check the motor data plate for minimum fla or rla @115 volts,then check the same for 230volts.

at 115 volts, a 15 amp breaker is not going to run a 5hp motor.even at 230 volts,the motor rated load amps is probably somewhere close to 28 amps.

115volts@15 amps is roughly a 3/4 horse motor.good luck,and maybe call a licensed electrician,it's worth the money.

You had it correct, Black is hot and goes black to black, White goes to white and is neutral, green goes to green and is ground. Most likely the motor is shot or is 220, 220 uses no neutral, only 2 hots. You must check the wiring configuration first, then check for a short. If it is not wired for 220, get another motor. I used one off a old washing machine before.

My 6 peak hp compressor runs on 110 just fine. It is a startup capacitor motor though. It must be plugged into the outlet before turning the switch on in order to start right. If it's plugged into the wall while the switch is already on, it tries to start, but turns really slow and seems like it would burn up if left like that more than a few seconds.

This compressor is also capable of being wired for 220.

what happened to your wiring were you able to fix it? once before i had the same problem but i tried to look over the internet and somehow helped me.

going to mess with it this weekend,it has the 2 caps...i think one is for start and the other run.
washing machine motor.........great idea!
