I've read that more power and possibly fuel economy can be had by moving your camshaft from being retarded to advanced by a few degrees, is this true? If it is, can this be done by just slipping it forward one tooth on the timing belt?

best way to do it is with an adjustable cam gear, most after market cams are ground with 4* of advance.

the best thing to do is degree the cam in proper, then make adjustments.

dont do it by moving the cam one tooth over with the stock pulleys, youll be lucky if it runs at all since thats well over 10 degrees off, most adjustment recommended is +/- 6 degrees. there are sets of adjustable cam pulleys in various places.

I thought that the cams were set around 6 degrees retarded from factory? Or am I mistaken? Cause if so, ten degrees should put it bang on

im not sure what the exact measurement is but one tooth out of time is way off, i made that mistake changing my timing belt, had to go back in and redo it, dam thing backfired and wouldnt idle.

I just counted a cam gear, 38 teeth and 38 valleys =76 so 360 divided by 76 = 4.7368

so with that each tooth and each groove is worth 4.73*

Yes,but you can't move a just a half tooth, whole tooth is 9.46 degrees. You can cut a wider keyway in your bottom pulley, about a 1/8 inch and shim the back side of the keyway to advance it.we have heard of guys doing this to get by tech where you couldn't run a adjustable gear. Not that we ever would......

i just put a timing belt on my truck and with a tooth off it would not run. if you want more power need to go with something else besides a 4 banger.
