Hey everyone. I recently picked up a Wildernest topper for my ranger and while I love it does weight more than I thought. I'm considering an add-a leaf kit like this one, https://www.sdtrucksprings.com/add-a-leaf-kits.

Anyone have experience with these? Seems pretty simple to install but any advice or tips are appreciated.

That shouldn't be bad. Just leave the factory springs installed. If you try to take them out, you'll likely regret it.
Make sure that however you stack them, all the leaves are captured so that they can still slide.

88RangerNate:

Sounds like you want it to handle well with the that load on the truck; I have tried to use several companies Add a Leaf systems, helper leaves for canopies and general payloads...

In the end I recommend building a custom Explorer overload plus 4 leaf pack instead, presuming your on an 88 Ranger? If you use the add a leaf and extended shackles, it will probably look right but without the extra spank that those Explorer pack overloads have, it will eventually sag, worse yet, it will feel squirley.

Another reason to consider this is needing new U-bolts, might just as well make it worth. You will also need a longer center bolt too. I had trouble finding one when I did this, so I went to the GOOD hardware store and needed to do a little work for everything to be happy.

Hi @gaz thanks for the tips! I had planned on heading to the junkyard for a few odds and ends anyways so I'll keep my eyes peeled for an early Explorer. Already ordered the extended U-bolts so I'm just about all set for the add-a-leaf.

Just to be clear:

An add-a-leaf VS an Explorer "overload" is no contest; adding the largest non main spring from your Ranger pack to the Explorer's pack will change your WORLD!

I took the full Explorer pack, cut the "eyes" off and mounted it under a Ranger top leaf. Handles great and instant lift. (I think it netted about an 1.5 to 2 in over the old worn out springs without the lift blocks.)
