I seem to be picking up on the theme that an a4ld is a less than acceptable transmission without spending billions of dollars. I have a 91 supercab ranger 2wd, 4.0 with an a4ld that pukes fluid out the front.:bad: Not all the time and there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. I have installed a after market cooler, I don't think it helped. It goes a week to several weeks no problem then it pukes it all out again I fill it up and we start this dance all over again. When its not puking it works and shifts great. I had it rebuilt once already so I think I want a new tranny. What other automatics will fit with out breaking my bank.

None. There is a company making a kit to install an AOD but, if I remember right the kit was like $450. You would also need a trans and a new driveshaft. If you baby the A4ld it will last a long time but, who wants to do that? They break really easy.

Yep what Mutant Pony said. Just convert to a five speed manual and be done with that a4ld pos.

The problem your having isn't a new one. You say you had it "re-built"? Well, I would take it back to the shop that did the work and ask them if they checked the converter bushing while they did the work. If not, that would most likely be the root of all your problems. The A4LD isn't that bad of a transmission. Yeah, it has it's weak points, but it's still a good transmission of used properly and when repaired, it's repaired properly. If the shop was a reputable one, and they knew what they were doing, I'm quite positive that you wouldn't be having the troubles you are talking about. Also, there are NUMEROUS updates put put by ford on these transmission that help prolong the life of them. this link http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/AutoTransFix/A4LD_Fix.htm is just a little of what's out there as far as information on them.

Thanks

Ok thanks for all the info on the infamous a4ld. It really does appear that it a love/hate thing with them. I think the rebuild on mine was good with the exception of the front seal. I wonder if one of the big shops ie: aamco, mr transmission would be a good choice for a front seal job. As they have a warrenty on leakage. Or go with a local shop I don't know who to trust.

I think I would go with someone who is gonna stand behind the work. A reputable shop SHOULD know of this problem in the front seal area and know the proper way to repair it. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
