I have a 94 Ranger 4x4 with an A4LD that has a harsh 1-2 upshift. I've read lots of different threads online about 1-2 shifts but most are talking about the RPMs going really high before shifting. My truck doesn't go above normal RPMs but when it does shift it feels rough. I don't have any other transmission issues.

I found an old service bulletin that recommends replacing the intermediate servo release accumulator spring in the valve body with an updated part. I also read it could be the governor. I don't have much experience with this transmission and was looking for some advice before I start replacing parts.

I have checked the fluid and it looks pretty clean. Motor and transmission mounts look ok. Its not my driveshaft because I have checked and lubed it already. And I adjusted bands according to spec and it did not change at all.

Today I checked the vacuum line at the modulator. No trans fluid in the line but still not sure if modulator is good or not.

Going to replace the fluid filter this weekend. Any other ideas?

Did you check the vacuum line at the intake manifold tee? It should upshift at around 12-15mph with medium throttle pressure. Just replace the vacuum hose on both sides of the tubing when you change the fluid. You can also drain the torque converter just pull the inspection plat and turn the enine over until you see the plug on the torque converter. It wouldnt hurt to flush the oil cooler as well. How smooth is the downshift at 30mph when you put the skinny pedal to the floor?
