Is the older Ranger's air box designed to vaccum snow?

Glad my intake is in the fender. Never have problem with it. Then again, I never cross rivers above the bottom of the cab or driving through blinding snow storms. I do on the occasion drive through snow banks.
 
unless you modified your intake, im pretty sure it draws air from the same location as mutants (behind the passanger headlight).
 
I was thinking something a little more like this.

That one I made from really expensive 304 stainless. I was thinking I would build this one from 3" exhaust pipe and paint it black.
By the way: I got that 304 stainless for free and don't have enough for another one.

i like the way people build those but with the likely hood of me crushing either fender i had to find a different way to do it. the pic below shows why the cowl and your stainless pipe would not work for me.

it would suck if crushing a fender also choked my engine off.

looking back, i should of hacked through the firewall right into the cowl and built some kind of air box to rest inside the cowl, maybe even the glove box.

Apperantly you didn't pay very close attention to the fender on the 'frog. Go back up and take a better look at that fender. LOL.
The tire now sticks out beyond the snorkle. The only way that is getting damaged is if I put it on its side.

ive seen guys run drier hose from the "dirty" side of the stock filter box, to the center wiper transmission access panel right in the middle of the firewall. the result is the same cowel induction as shown in the tech library, but its dent-proof.

although i doubt you could dent your fenders bad enough to choke the engine off.

you could always do what destroyer did on his BII:

I would run mine inside (not like that though) but, The heater unit is in the way and it is a little more important right now!!!
I don't think the cowl induction would solve my problem either. Actually, that would probably be worse.
 
how would it be worse? :icon_confused:

maybe you should rig your preheater to work full time while your out playing. that would melt off the snow as it got sucked in.
 
I get a LOT more snow on the cowl then I get in the grill.

I'm thinking about something under the hood for now. I may just open the back end of the air box so that it has an alternate source for air. I had a lot of snow under the hood but, very little in the blower motor area.

I know that in the 95-97(may be different in earlier years) on the 2.3 engines the stock air intake goes into the fender. There is a hole in the inner fender, the stock filter is cone-ish. It's in a cylindrical air filter box, with more tube shot through the inner fender, then it's baffle is parallel to the ground. So the air they pull is about 4 inches from the top of the fender. It's pretty protected because the fender liner, outer fender, and inner fender. When I had mine I had it deeper in water than the headlights(with Extended vent tube on the axle btw)

Thats how it was on mine before the K&N system.
 
i know what system your refering to, i just didnt think they started that until the newer body style....guess they started it earlier for some reason :dunno:

I could be wrong, maybe it is for a newer style, But I'd wonder why mine would have had it:icon_confused: I doubt my Grandpa would have done that lol. But I sure appreciated having it in my stupider days lol.
 
Pull the molded horn off the air box and pull the corrigated duct and the vaccuum actuator off and flip the horn around so that it is pointing back. Has worked fine for me for years with no problems.

You are right. My 96' Ranger 2.3L takes the air intake from the passenger front fender. I removed the baffle inside the fender to allow more air flow and increase air intake height. Has worked so far. I'm still able to drive through flooded roads that would other wise stall out lesser height challenged cars or trucks.
