99 to 04 swap

ive got the truck of my dreams..... a 99 ranger 4x4 manual but the problem was it had a 3 litre in it so i drove it hard till i blew the block so i could drop a 4 litre into it. well i got the 04 4 litre in and hooked up but my problem is where the wires go threw the fire wall on the 99 there is 3 big conections but on the 04 theres only 2. is there a simpler way the cutting and reconnecting every one (its like 120 wires).im open to ideas. PLEASE HELP

You will need to swap the engine harness to a 98-00 4.0 harness. You may also run into the 04 injectors not plugging into the older style harness as well as other sensors. Oh I just realized that the 04 is an sohc so I am not sure if that will solve your problem.

I have never done an sohc swap but I can tell you the computers(and wiring) changed in 2001. I think it might have changed again in 2004. I am not sure what the easy answer is. I know some explorers in the 98-2000 years had the soch motor, That might be the place to get the wiring and computer. You are also going to run into the pats system not wanting to work. You need to talk to someone who has done it.

i just put an 04 ranger motor in my 99 explorer i finally got it running with the old ecu but i cant by pass the pats system. and it needs that ecu believe me it runs like crap with the 99 pushrod ecu.

At the rate I'm going I'm seriously considering just putting the entire harness from the donor in my 98. The only rub would be how the harness goes through the firewall; it would meen more holes to cut and those 3 big holes left empty on the drivers side.

Your best bet is to swap the dash harness from the 04, you can cut the 3rd hole on the drivers side, and make plugs for the passenger side

I got my 4.0 SOHC dropped in this weekend and have started getting things hooked up. Since the connectors did not work out I went out to the junk yard and found a 99 exploder with the SOHC and snagged its harness. So far everything looks pretty similar. I'm now just waiting on the factory books to come and I can see what needs to get moved around. From what I read the interior harness talks very little with the engine, but I'll be posting more about that when I get the diagrams and can cross reference everything.

I elected not to use the harness from the 04 since it was power nothing and my truck is fully loaded. I did not want to try to hunt down the missing harnesses to make it all play nice.

Im interested in this and well Im in the same boat as you. I have a 2000 ford ranger trailhead. I bought a wrecked 2004 sport trac 4x4 with the 4.0 sohc engine. My plan was to just swap in the 4x4. So far its been pretty easy. Now Im thinking I would like the 4.0 in my ranger since I just have 3 liters in it it would be nice. I have the entire wreck. I just pulled the entire harness off the chasis and the dash I even have the steering column.I tired to start it before I pulled it and it. It would not turn over something was holding the starter out. I believe I have everything but the gem. We will see how it goes.

I figured I would give an update on my progress here is a pick of the 4.0. I just got it to run today. Im gonna trim up the harness. Then I will try to swap it in.
