The 4.0 sohc was easy to get running with the entire factory harness out of an 04 sport trac. I just hooked the harness to the motor made sure everything was grounded. I also had the steering column with the pats key ring and even had the keys. I also ripped the fuel system out of the sport trac too. As for swapping it into my 2000 ranger it got a little difficult not bad though Im still working out the bugs. I did not want to swap entire harnesses so I left the 2000 Ranger truck alone. The first problem I ran into was the fuel system. I dont know for sure but I have read that the returnless fuel system out of the exploders has a regulater in the tank. Thats a problem because the 00 Ranger as a return line with the regulator on the engine. So far I have it hooked to the ranger fuel system and it seems to be doing fine. I havent had too swap fuel systems. All I had to do was find a good flared coupling and put the 4.0 connector on the ranger fuel line.
The next issue I ran into was the 42 pin connector. There are a few wires you will need to run into the cab. The Pats curcuit for the 04 4.0 sohc was controlled by the PCM. It also has the start relay wires going from the PCM directly to the start relay. You will have to run wires for the Pats key ring if you have the key ring. One from the Power Diode to the key ring. Then you will have to run the TX signal and the RX signal direclty from the PCM to the key ring. You also have to run a ground for the key ring.Im in the middle of this swap as I right this. I just got the motor in the truck last weekend and I just got it starting last night. So if anyone has questions its a good idea to ask me while its still fresh on my memory. I have taken several notes on this swap. I have also pinned out every wire on the 4.0 before doing the swap.
Sorry I got carried away, too answer your question about what I did to get it started. When I bought the wreck someone had pulled all the 20 and 30 amp fuses out of the fuse block, so thats why I couldnt start it. It did not have anything to do with the gem since the Pats is controlled by the PCM. I just hooked the harness up put some fuses in and vroom it fired up. I never did track down the gem and as far as I know I don't need it. I also cut the 4x4 harness down and made my own out of it. I am going to put the 4x4 control module in my ranger so I can shift the transfer case. It will be easy since I made my own harness out of a factory one. I wont have to pull the dash or anything complicated like that. I think I will mount the 4x4 module under the driver seat and drill a hole through the floor pan to hook to the servo motor. Thats a hell of a lot easier than pullin the dash. You know when I read up on these swaps it definetly pays to be electricaly inclined. I couldnt imagine swaping an entire harness in one of these trucks. That would just suck and be time consuming as hell. So far It doesnt even look like I will have to go to the dealer.
