Removed the old filter as it was completely rusted over and had never been changed (~70,000mi). Unfortunately, cannot read any manufacturer info from it. Got it out with some resistance due to expanded rust. Replacement filter purchased at Autozone (confirmed as a fit for the vehicle) is exact same size as old one but ONE difference in design.

On the old filter, on the end closer to the gas tank, the quick-connect "ridge" that clicks into place is significantly wider than the one on the new filter. It's not a bigger ridge in the sense that it sticks out farther (diameter-wise), but rather it's like a spacer. Like instead of a single ridge, it actually takes the space of three or maybe even four. It's clearly meant to fill a gap, because when the new filter went in, there was noticeable play on the tank end. The other end, which also has a "normal" ridge, fit perfectly.

Obviously, the line connector is different on the back side than the front side of the filter lines. So, I've looked and looked and consulted and haven't gotten anything better than "You'll have to replace the line connector." But is there a (another) fuel filter out there that matches what I need? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I seem to remember something about the big filter on the Rat. All the plumbing and wiring got shifted when I repaired the LF cab support and frame rail I think I bodged one connection with a piece of fuel hose from my BMW and the other connection worked. I basicly butted the the 2 inside a piece of high pressure hose about 3 inches long and hose clamped each end. Whatever I did, it has worked for 4 yrs so far.:D

Take both filters to the parts house and have them go thru and look for an EXACT match.

I only found 1 part number for 1998 4.0l fuel filter, Part Number: 9155(FG-986-B)

Could that old filter have part of the fuel line stuck to it so it look like one wide ridge?
Didn't think there was anything in there that could come out but............
