97 2.3L transplant into a 91 ranger

no ac hooked up... Don't really need it here in Hawaii.. If you don't have a/c as well, then I can give you the belt number. Ask for a belt that is a half inch smaller than the belt for the stock 97. I also had to put some washers between the alternator and the block in order to shim out the alternator to get the belt to fit right. Still not perfect, but very close.. I decided not to use the 91 intake. Made a hole in the air duct for the ACT sensor.. Have not dealt with the EVP switch or EGR. Need to focus on that and somevacuum lines that are not hooked up next... The Alternator wires got spliced to fit the 97 alternator. All my wires were spliced when I got the truck all ready. Not ideal, but the truck does run pretty dam good..:icon_thumby:

Got mine running yesterday, Thanks for the help!
Please read my thread and give opinions and advice on problems I`m trying to iron out now.
Again THANKS

Joel, you should be able to figure out the install... have you looked for my instructions in other posts about putting it in? I covered about everything. all you have to do is make a template using the front cover bolts for location and mark the 3 holes involved with the crank sensor and drill them all for 6mm threads and the one that was a pin use a cut off 6mm bolt that has a long shank and loctite that in place as a locating pin, although you could probably come up with a 6mm roll pin in Canada... I couldn't find one in the 20 minutes I looked... :)

Ya I've read through the posts. Problem I have is that I just have the 97 engine. I've been scavaging parts from a truck in the wreckers. So I don't have 100% access to an older block to get the hole pattern from. I'll try to get a pattern from the truck at the wreckers

One quick question I have is how stuborn can the front pully be to pull off the crank? I got the pully off the truck in the wreckers but I still have the hub on the crank. I may try to get it on Saturday so I can finally get this thing together and in the truck. Have a DIS module on it's way.

next time someone does this they should keep the template, many people would be willing to pay for one i'm sure. i'll need one soon, so if any of you guys want to make an extra template for me i'd appreciate it :)

Got the block drilled and tapped for the CAS. it's all mounted up so now I just hope that it's in the right spot or I'm going to have to try to make an adjustable bracket if I have to adjust it.

I made my template out of plexyglass, which wasn't the best choice, too brittle, tried to make a reproducable one... anywho, wasn't the most accurate template but when I cranked it up it started and worked fine and still does, my only problem was the '86 crank bolt was too long for the '91 crank pulley and that caused some issues that I don't want to admit to...

I trimmed my bolts down. Even though I had not broken through with the top bolt. The only one I broke through with was the one closest to the oil pump gear.

I also had to shave down the bosses on the back of the bracket as the pulley assembly was too close to the block and the vanes contacted the sensor.

Scott you remember how close the sensor bracket was to the boss at the bottom of the opening? Was it almost touching?

yeah, that front seal housing looks different than what I have, so if you have to trim it that sounds reasonable...

Ok my stand was too tall also. I had to sand it down on a bench sander.
I guess I got mine off a little because it runs better 1 notch off towards the little indent in the plate behind the pulley. My arrow is on this plate too, I thought it was my timing mark at first. Seems like arrow was on the pulley itself on the 91 but I`m not sure.
Any way when I saw the right timing mark and timed it right, but it still didn`t run just right, So I moved it 1 belt notch and it is pretty good.
I think my IAC may be gummed up. It will stall some times.
How were you thinking of making it adjustable?

Ok, Hello guys. I have installed the 98 2.5 engine in a 94 ranger using the 94 non california computer & a 93 intake & wire harness. My questions are with the mounting of the ckp sencor. I have recieved a 89 harmonic ballancer & acc pulley & the ckp sencor from a 89 & also the 89 front engine cover. Can I use the 98 harmonic ballancer or do I need to run a 93-94 or will the 89 ballancer work? Also I noticed the 89 sencor is slightly larger & has only one 4 wire plug that will plug into my harness. My 93 harness had 2 plugs. the 4 wire & a single wire plug. Please help. I need to finish these loose ends.

you'll need the balancer with the vanes on it for the sensor, either the '89 or '94 should work.

The '89 sensor would have had the second connector but it's just a shield ground to keep interference out, most likely not the most important thing in the world
