I've been looking to upgrade the plugs and wires on my 4.0 (it has a misfire) and I figured I might as well upgrade my coilpack while I'm at it. The coilpack I found is an msd direct replacement for a 96 explorer 4.0 ohv and it doesnt say that its applicable to be used in my truck (97 ranger 4.0 ohv) but arent they the exact same engine? Can someone confirm or deny that it will work in my truck please I'm on a high school budget so I cant afford to buy it if it wont work. The name and part number are: Ignition Coil-Street Fire(TM) Ford 6-Tower Pack MSD 5528

Yes, same engine, so same coil pack specs

Not sure if they used the same 4-wire connector

The Ranger 4.0ls(OHV and SOHC) used the same coil pack from 1990 to 2011, FOTZ-12029-A was original part number

MSD 5528 shows connector pointed up, but looks to be the same type, so should be fine

It will work. Ford only really had two V6 coil packs, one for the 4.0, and one for the 3.0/3.8. IIRC the only difference between them was the plug wire connections.
