2.3L ('83-'97) 96 2.3l stock exhaust size?

I can't seem to find the info on here, is the pipe diameter the same throughout the whole exhaust? What size inlets and outlets do I need so I don't need to use size adapters? I want to replace the cat with a resonator and replace the muffler as well but cant find the info. Also, is the measurement of say a 2 1/2" pipe the ID or OD measurement? Thanks for helping me save time searching or hacking mine up just to order parts.....

Exhaust "pipe" is technically tube, and is therefore measured by o.d.

I don't know for sure what stock size is. Buy some cheapo calipers and find out.

Pretty sure it's all 2"

You aren't going to gain anything by getting rid of the cat other than trouble codes so don't bother, they aren't as much of a restriction as everyone thinks unless they're broken... the '70's was a long time ago.

Honestly, the only real reason for the cat change is because I have rust holes on the top of the housing under the heat shield that sounds like a dissonant symphony of half inch and quarter inch farts and I have had enough of it. I can handle the cat effeciency sensor wigging out. I am thinking of a resonator in place of the cat because I tend to be vigrant and dont know which state I might end up in....so a "resemblance" of a cat would be good, and I think a res would help keep any kackle down when tied along with a freer flowing muffler.

Thank you for the advice guys...I didn't know how to measure the pipe to order parts.....and I live 45 mins from the closest parts store so accuracy means alot to me at this point.

I was hoping for a quick cheat but the od measurement is the answer.

If you are just looking to be like stock, the tailpipe is available cheap already made and it's in 2" when I bought one years ago, the rest will have to be custom and will likely involve welding around the cat but you might be able to get away with some swelled extensions or something...

If you swap cats, make sure you get a CA cat if it has CA emissions.
If it is "Federal" emissions go Federal cat.
MagnaFlow makes a replacement out of Stainless with mandrel bends and a more efficient catalyst.
Definitely don't want to run a leaky cat!
