I have a 1994 Ford Ranger with a 5 speed and the 4.0.

Had the valve covers replaced and now it will not start.

Engine is throwing the 3 digit code 5-2-2 which is Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) circuit fault.

I can't figure out how to remedy the problem and need to drive to work in the morning.

Thanks.

If it was just the valve covers it shouldn't have upset anything. Trace the wire from the sensor and follow it all the way you can and see if it's broken, corroded, eaten through by stupid packrats, etc. If not check the fuse or circuit breaker. If the fuse is burnt, you might have high resistance in the wire. Also if it's a circuit breaker, try to crank the truck and have someone listen to the breaker. If it clicks on and off, you might have the same problem. If it's a fuse, slap a new one in and drive it carefully, until you can have the problem fixed. That's unfortunately all I've got for you. Hope you get it sorted out!

Does it clunk, turn over or nothing? It sounds silly but check the connector to the clutch start switch. I had a similar issue and narrowed it down the the crank position sensor. Bought a new one, crawled under the truck and found the damn thing was unplugged!

The neutral switch is plugged in. It was kind of ratty looking but it was covered in wire loom so I pulled the loom back and could not locate any damage to the wire.

The engine cranks over and over but will not start.

If the crank position sensor was bad , it would throw a code though correct ? Because the only code is for the neutral switch.

This is a huge noob question but , where is the crank position sensor on the 4.0 ? In front of the motor near the water pump ?

sensor

It is in the same place for the 4.0L v6 or the 5.0L v8, on the right front of the timing chain cover down by the crank pulley. Replacement is straight forward, unplug the connector, remove the 2 8-mm bolts holding the crank sensor to the timing chain cover and replace the sensor

There is a plug on the back of the motor that is unplugged and the contacts look very clean like it has not been unplugged for 16 years.

The plug is round though and the picture on autozone.com appears to show the plug being flat.

This is what autozone shows the CPS looking like :

This is what the unplugged plug looks like :

what do you have for a tranny? 5sp? i just looked at my 4.0. the same connector was unplugged i would say no worries considering mine runs, and with no engine light.

K. Try this next. If you haven't tried to start it say in the last 30 minutes with the door open turn the ignition key to the on position. You should hear the fuel pump spool up pressure, kinda like a WIRRRR noise. It's very short and stops. If you don't hear this grab a test light and check at the fuel pump harness plug. Turn the key to the on position and see if you have power to the pump. If you do then you have the same issue I had last month. Bad Fuel Pump.

Why would the check engine light be on though ?

I will double check the fuel pump tomorrow after work.

Replace the neutral safety switch on the clutch pedal.
The original code is the problem. Trust the computer.

Fuel pump is good.

Next check will be the neutral safety switch on the clutch pedal.

Thanks.
