Ok so I'll keep this basic. I have a 94 ranger with a 5speed trans. 2wd. I want to swap it out for something with more umph. Don't know what will fit and what won't fit. I would like to keep current harness and trans if possible. Any ideas on this would be nice. If anyone has done this swap before please shate input

Pretty much limited to a 2.0/2.3 and i belive a 2.5.

Your best option is to turbocharge yours, or swap in a 2.3T from a tbird.

With the 2 3t (which I was thinking about doing) what years should I be looking for? And what all would I have to take with me over from the third to the ranger?

That i dont know. Im not sure how different (if at all) the wireing harness is. But im know the bell is the same and im 99% sure the motormounts are to.

Thank you for your thoughts. I would more then likely just swap for the 2.3t. If I convert my n/A 2.3 I will have to change pistons.and drill a hole for oil to turbo and back.

Notta problem.

Someone more knowledgable with the force fed 4 bangers will be along to help.

1994 was the last year of the Hall Effect Crank sensor on 2.3l so you would have to swap computers to use 1995 or later 2.3l or 2.5l.

Turbo is a good upgrade
Read here: http://therangerstation.com/tech_library/Turbos.shtml

Or 5.0l V8 swap

There is really nothing in between because swapping engine sizes requires the same work: engine, transmission, mounts, computer and wiring, exhaust and driveline(s)
So why do a V6

V8 swap info here: http://therangerstation.com/tech_library/V8Conversions.shtml

While I think you should always do fuel injection, the 5.0l(302) swap does allow you to ditch computer altogether, and go with carb and distributor setup, manual trans or AOD auto

One thing i forgot to add, if you live in one of the more crybaby areas of the country with emission testing, a tbird 2.3T swap may not be an option, they went out of production 89ish, and most emission laws state any swapped engine has to be same year or newer then the host vehicle.

Out of curiosity, which gears are in your rear end? Rolling a 4.10 axle in place of a 3.55 or something would give you more punch outta the hole, and your clutch would thank you.

Also, if you did decide to go with a 302, dont be afraid of a carburator. Itll make swapping much eaiser. With a good choke they do just fine in the cold, and you will maybe lose 1-2mpg depending on how hard you hammer it over a EFI, and power would be more less the same assuming you use the same year engine (IE, a 95 302 with a swapped on 4bbl isnt going to lose any power over a 302 of the same year with factory EFI)

I have a 1997 2.3. Is it possible to swap with a 1994 or will it not be possible because of the crank sensor ?

Welcome to TRS :)

You should start your own thread
But no, if you mean to swap the 2.3l engine, crank sensor is a BIG stumbling block, need a 1995-2000 2.3l or 2.5l Lima engine for that 1997 swap
