Whats with you guys? this guy seems non-aggressive and is simply stating opinion and his experience, why the hostility?
I dont know any of you guys, and I"m fairly new here, but I have seen nothing but respect and courtesy around here. However my take on this thread is that Big Jim M has a major pantybunch going on for some reason.... did something carry over from another thread or something?
I dont see any reason to question the way engineers built our trucks. For the most part they did a great job, but why wouldnt you ask questions? You have aftermarket companies building headers for our trucks that generate more power, if the engineers are gods why didn't they build them that way to start with? I think its because they had a goal and a purpose of their own when they designed the truck for the masses. But some of us just dont care about NVH or how fast the truck warms up, or other things the engineers designed for and place a higher value on performance over comfort. For those reasons we modify our trucks, even explore ways to change the air box to improve performance.
...Futching around with the well engineered intake devices cannot do anything for your ride that is GOOD FOR IT! ...
This is my point, your comment is subjective. From your view, or maybe even the engineer's view, you can't improve it, the air box is perfect! But pretend you only care about an extra 3hp, and don't care if the filter lets in a few dirt particles a few microns larger, or if that causes your engine to last 150k miles instead of 250k miles. In that case, the air box sucks balls, and it needs to be reworked.
See what I'm saying? Just because you have different objectives when you look at the design of a truck doesn't mean someone else is wrong. They just have different priorities.
I think the way you lashed out at this guy was very douchy.
3hp isn't even measurable. There are far too many variables to even measure that.
The Stock airbox/intake is not restrictive to where it limits or decreases power. Therefore, adding an aftermarket filter/intake will NOT increase power or mileage. So, it is a WASTE OF MONEY in that regard.
The motor isn't going to move more air from a different filter/intake, because you aren't doing anything internal to the motor to increase the CFM. It's simple
Disagree. If the intake/filter is restrictive, or has additional filters or elements added to suppress sound or serve some other purposes besides performance, and you remove those restrictions, you will get more power out of the motor, without changing any of the motors internals.
The reason why the OP's question has merits is because he is asking about a "silencer", which sounds to me like a NVH part. If that part was added to the intake to reduce sound, its possible that it was added at the cost of a few HP on the motor or overall efficiency of the motor. This may not actually be the case here, but there are other vehicles that it truly is, and therefore I don't believe this was a stupid question.
I applaud everyone's efforts to protect the noobs, but calling his questions stupid or yelling at him was the wrong approach.
For the record, my air box is still in stock form.
It seems like the best ways to get more power out of these OHV motors is not in the intake, but in cams, headwork, or exhaust (headers)... short of F/I of course.
I'd like to know just which vehicles DO HAVE restrictive intakes.. Can you please provide some evidence of how much restriction and which vehicles that occurs on..

Jim, I'm expecting more from you than to say no cars have restrictive intakes.... You should retract that statement if you are concerned about false informing noobs.....
