93 Splash in SC, V8-Swap version

Wait, does that year not have an EGR tube on the passenger side? I can check if my mountaineer has a usable manifold on that side, if it does you are welcome to it... I'll know later today
No external egr tube. In fact, that was a mystery that was eluding me until now, maybe. I thought it odd when I was removung the uoper intake. It looks like the exhaust gases pass up through the center of the intake and make their way iver to the egr valve internally. Truly a wierd configuration. Seeing your question, I just went out to the garage and figured it out.

Here, I'm holding what I assumed is the egr valve next to where it mounts on the upper intake plenum. (Don't remember which way the valve was mounted. Oops)

here, I'm pointing to what I believe is a passage in the lower intake that must lead to exhaust port(s) in the heads. Truly a "WTF" discovery.

In addition to the wierd egr system on this engine, I was surprised to find that the PCV does not mount in a hole on a valve cover. It mounts in a port at the rear of the lower intake. A real pleasure to access while in the engine bay. You can actaully see part of that port in the picture above. It's right next to the part # sticker on the fuel header crossover hose.

Can you be proactive and move the pcv away from the back? Using 90° and tubing?

Yeah, that PCV location really sucks...

Well that explains some things between the GT40 and GT40P heads, internal versus external EGR ports... The Mountaineer I have should be like yours, I'll check to see if it looks good within a few hours, it decided to rain today so there's that...

I hadn't thought of that yet. I'll have to look at how it's routed. I think the tubing was all up under the upper intake on the driver side. I think it terminates at a horuzontal barb under there. I already have a new PCV on hand. I might be able to find a different valve cover that has the port. Then block off the hole in the back.

That started in the 80's. Functionally i like the idea of it better than in a valve cover.

Internal EGR is a less desireable variant. Should be easy to delete if so desired.

I wouldn't mind deleting egr. Not sure what's involved, yet.

1.Remove valve and install blanking plate.

2. Remove vacuum line

3. ???? The egr position sensor to keep the pcm happy.

4. Remove EVR? Seems to be the device controling how much vacuum to open or shut egr. Could probably just leave that plug hanging.

I don't see a dpfe sensor in the diagrams. So, this system must just assume there is X amount of flow based on the egr position. I wonder hpw ot would act with a fixed resistor giving it a continuous "position" other than wide open or fully closed. Or am I overthinking it?

I looked at the mountaineer, it had an EGR port on the manifold, not sure what I have hasn't been swapped to a newer version or what you have is weird...

That said, it had heat shields so not sure if it's two piece like yours or solid but if you want I can pull it next weekend and find out... if it's one piece it'd just need the EGR port welded shut (easy), if it's compromised I can fix it, have access to straight edges and belt sanders so can fix that up no problem... unless you just weld yours back up but would likely break again at the repair... worst case I can pull the one from my '98 as well and see how it is...

Well, a decision has been made.

Is it the right decision? I dunno.
Is it the best decision? I dunno.
Is it the easiest decision? Meh. Not the hardest.
Is it the cheapest decision? Hell no!
Is it my decision that I’m going to stick with for the duration of the project or the next 47 seconds, whichever expires first? Yes.

I’m NOT going to transplant the Explorer dash and firewall into the ranger. I have my eye on a stand-alone digital gauge cluster touch screen thingy. Have to wait for some money to arrive. Wiring won’t be bad. I need some bulkhead connectors or re-purpose some old ones. I want the OBD II connection to the PCM. So, that got extracted from the interior harness this morning.

My current setup has the non-AC ductwork in the engine bay that leaves more access to the engine. I can figure out cruise control buttons. I can do without tilt steering. I can figure out the shifter for the transmission, either a floor shifter or a steering column from the junk yard.

There IS a plan. Full speed ahead.

And just exactly how are we supposed to make fun of you in private if you don't post a link to your stand-alone digital gauge cluster touch screen thingy?

Will a Ranger column shifter shift a 4R70? If so then just find a tilt column out of an automatic truck. Floor shifters are cool and all but they eat room which is precious in a standard cab.

Maybe? I guess it just needs the right number of positions. I can probably use the Explorer cable if necessary. So that is something I’m considering.

The dash? I’m leaning toward this. It will fit with room to spare and I could mount my OBD II port right next to it.

Yes. I hooked my Ranger cable to the 4R70w, works just fine. Done it in two trucks now.
