93 Splash in SC, V8-Swap version

So, I don’t think I checked compression numbers on my 5.0, but when I had the heads off because of broken bolts I decided to lap the valves and found that one hole, I think it might have been #7, had a poor seal on the valves so it was good that I did that apparently. Not saying for sure you have the same situation but it makes me wonder…

Today's progress. That's a heck of a job for one old man. Couldn't get the bolt out of the head that holds the dipstick tube. So I cut the tube. No big deal, except that I forgot to pull the dipstick out first. Oops. Lots of oil leaking from rear of transmission.

First time I did it I just left the tube with the engine... I forgot about that bolt, that bolt is why I have extremely long 3/8" drive locking extensions, should have bought wobble sockets then too, it's slightly more doable with the engine angled back some but yeah, no bueno...

I wasn't sure how easy the tube would pull out of the transmission.

Fair, if I remember right I found out by accident...

should just pop out.

should just pop out.
That's what I assumed. But, to make it pop out properly, I would have the drop the transmission vertically. But I knew it had to move back horizontally before going down. Just wasn't sure how all that would work out. In hindsight, the results couldn't have been much worse than what I did.

step a

drill hole....drain trans for the drain plug kit you will be installing....

step b unbolt bell bolt.....yank out dipstick tube......plug hole.

this is all after step...1.4666-7/45-8

those are the steps where you have removed the core supports to both vehicles....

when you are old and your back is fawked up its just a wise investment.......its even better than when you were just young and crazy and lazy.

of course....had you done that...you would have easily pulled the powertrain out in one piece and really been able to yank on that sucker....put the smackdown on that no good dipstick tube bastard...

and drained it wherever was most convienient...

Yeah. I'm considering core support removal much more seriously on the Ranger, now. That will make it much easier to sit things in place while I figure out engine and transmission mounting. Might also try to get the radiator a bit more forward. So, custom core support mods are in the works anyway.

This is all about learning. It's my first engine swap. Sometimes I waste time and energy trying to avoid doing extra work that would save me time and energy.
