hi all I'm new here but I have had my ranger for a year or so.
I enjoy my truck and don't want to lose it, but the other day I blew my transmission. I can't not find one up here in south coast MA.
The only thing I can find is a 4x2 tranny from a similar ranger, however I have a 4x4 and want to retain the 4x4.
I have been searching and I've noticed that all rangers have the same transmissions, with that in mind.
I saw on this page the pictures of the two different transmissions and from what it looks, on the rear of the transmission of the 4x4 and 4x2 there is a flange.
It appears that they can be switched.

Long story short can you unbolt the rear of the trany and switch the casting around the output shaft of the trany to the 4x4 rear to accept the transfer case bolt up adapter?
Has anyone used a 4x2 tranny and converted it to a 4x4 trany?
By the way we are discussing standard 5spd.

There has been at least 3 different manual transmissions in the ranger truck. If both trans are the same I believe you have to swap the main shaft? as well as the end your talking about.

On manual yes, you can swap tail shaft and housing, if the same transmission model of course
On automatic no, the tail shaft, as far as I have seen can only be changed if you disassemble the whole transmission.

Ok awesome! Then I have possibly found a tranny with 110,000 miles for my truck.
I will let you guys know how it goes. I will find out soon when I get a change to pull my tranny out.
Thanks for the info, I just didn't want to think I was crazy!

This is where I'm getting my info from.

This is where I'm thinking that it is possible.

I have a Mazda M50D-R1, ill take a look at the new tranny and do some measurements to compare with mine, the person lives like 1/2 mile from me.
From what I'm reading "adsm08" is saying that he is capable of doing the swap. I have no problem pulling the transmission out then opening the case to swap the tail shaft and extension housing.
