I have a 1993 Ranger 2.3 and I just spent $300 for a complete tune up and now whenever I drive more than about ten miles, the Check Engine Light comes on. Everything seems to be working okay. It's running better than ever, so I have no idea what the problem is. The oil pressure is good also.

The truck sat for about three years without being driven prior to my obtaining it.
Any ideas other than take it back to the mechanic? I took it to Advance Auto Parts and was told they could not read the code because the truck was too old....?

Thanks

The CEL usually indicates that one or more of your sensors are detecting something out of spec...obviously...but it can also be triggered by things like the speedometer not working, a vacuum line is off that causes a sensor to not read properly, or a sensor that was simply not connected properly during the tune-up.

First thing I'd suggest is to just visually check all the sensor connections and vacuum lines to make sure they are connected and maybe even check the hoses for leaks. If that doesn't get you anywhere then you can try reading the codes the old fashioned way...

There is a link in the tech library for checking the older OBD I codes...I will see if I can find it and post it up here for you...but check the tech library for scanning codes in the mean time...

I appreciate the help. Now when you say "try reading the codes the old fashioned way..." that's where you lost me. How does one go about that?
