i have a 91 2.3 liter with dual plugs. I have a mounting plate on the passenger side for 2 col packs, it looks like at one time they were both there. But now one is mounted down behind the power steering pump. What is the correct way for them to be installed?

as long as they are both there, it doesn't matter... that being the situation either means it's not the original engine or the previous owner broke the original passenger side mount and replaced it with the one that's there now from something newer...

the correct way is with both coil packs in the mount on the passenger side of the motor with the connectors facing towards the firewall on the back one and towards the radiator on the front one. Dont know what some one did that for, but trying to get the wiring back where it's supposed to be will probably be a pain. i'd start looking over the wiring harness and make sure they didn't mess with anythign else.

Thanks for the info. I guess I will leave it as is for now until I replace the coils.

in the early '90's Ford moved them around a bit, the first iteration was with right where the distributor would be and the other right in front of the exhaust manifold (I know this, I have two engines set up this way, works fine), after a while they moved them around, I think there was a bracket to put both on the drivers side behind the alternator/power steering pump and another that put them both on the passenger side. The wires are only so long, if it's mounted under the intake, that's where that harness was designed to put it

it most likely means you have a slightly newer engine, probably a good thing

the bracket on the driver side is only for mounting one coil and it is a pain to get to that is why i was wondering. And a lot of the wires are wrapped with electrical tape and i found a cut wire that i have no idea what it is for.

probably just the radio capacitor, I wouldn't worry about it

if you want to order new plug wires, get them for an '89 or '90 as they for sure have that mount setup.

see how much room there is on the wiring harness, I know on mine there was only like 3" of wire sticking out to go to that coil, so there wasn't any room to move it anywhere, but if there's room, move it...

it's only 3 wires per connector anyways, you could always just extend them if they wont reach. some of the wiring on my truck had factory electrical tape. but you might want to open it up and see what kind of mess is inside.
