hi guys,
i am trying to replace the rear seal on this axle, it has that about 1 inch thick spacer thing that is pressed on, then the bearing, and then the seal.
my question is how do i get that spacer thing off with out a press and taking it somewhere, i have a slide hammer, ive heard you can use it and some other tool to get it off, but im not sure.

thanks
Jon

you really need a bearing splitter and a press, a slide hammer wont do shit.... what you could try is get a bearing splitter, put the bearing splitter up on soe blocks with the axle shaft facing up, hammer the shaft down.

Honestly if you are going though the trouble replace the bearings. If you want to attempt to reuse the bearing you will need a bearing puller and a press. You can get them off that way and can be pressed on again. Not having those will require to take it somewhere or buy them. I have the tools and I still replace the bearings. With new bearings you will get a new ring. Drill an approx. 1/8in hole in the spacer almost to the the shaft. Use a sharp chisel and strike at the hole the spacer will crack and slide off. Use a cut off wheel, cut the bearing cage and cut a slice in the race. Strike with chisel and slide off. Stick your new bearing in the oven at 350-400 degrees for about 20 min and the will slide right on. You will have a new bearing and no special tooling required.
