Hi All

The shifter does not lock into park.
When I turn it off and take the keys out I can still run the shifter through the gears.

It will only start in Park like it should, Probly neutral too but did not think to try that.

I do not see anything about this in my Chiltons.

Where can I find info about the shifter and how it locks into park?

Thanks
Bill

Sounds like the park pin is broke.

To Clarify

The shifter does stay in park.
The button does need to be pushed to move the shifter out of park.

The problem is that the when the key is removed I can press the button on the shifter and move it through the gears,

The shifter is not actually "locked" in park to where it can not be moved at all without the key in the run position.

Thanks
Bill

Pretty sure that's normal. My '84 will shift without the key on; the old floor shifters were, well, "old school", and don't have an ignition interlock.

I did a headunit in what I think was an 83 Honda Accord with an auto, and to "lock" the auto shifter you had to take the key and literally lock the shifter it had a lock cylinder in the shifter bezel.

My fault Bill. I really need to start reading th epost all the way through first. But I do agree that there is no park lock for your shifter on that.

It was before the days of "saftey". You had to push the button, but you didnt need the keys. I think there were a few incidents of kids rolling out the driveway that prompted this to change.

My 88 was the same.

It now however doesnt need anything, as the button broke one day. I had to get home, so i removed the inner workings of the button.
