88 2ltr weber mod

My pump bracket broke off too...took me months to find one and when I finally got it hooked up the truck ALMOST passed the e-test...was only 25 points off on the HC at road speed...and that could have been the adjustment on the fuel mixture...

I have a similar setup and it is actually way better than the 2.0 with the original carb and exhaust...I'm not going to win any races either, but it sure is nice to have a bit more umph...

thx for the help. someone told me on here that taking off the smog pump was illegal i only ask because my dad told me to take it off to help with stress on the motor i live in OK and theres no emissions and inspection what do i do?:icon_confused:

I can't tell you what to do but I took mine off.
but I still run a catalytic convertor on my truck I just found a better flowing one to use with out air injection from the pump also known as a 2way convertor and it passed emissions better than the stock setup

ok i think i'm going to take it off... what kind of cat do you have ?

its off of an 94 cobra mustang H-pipe that a friend got for doing some work. and it was almost brand new. he said I could have the cats off of it so I took one of the lower ones and cut it close to the openings then angle cut some 2 1/4 inch pipe and welded it back together so the inlet and out let were straight. I had a friend who owns a bunch of exhaust equipment install a 2 1/4 inch system all the way back and mounting the cat where the transfercase would go on a 4x4. I also used a 17or 19 inch(can't remember for sure)cherrybomb brand turbo muffler and exited the tail pipe out the right rear corner at about a 40 degree angle. it is a little loud but not over bearing.
and thanks for the compliment on the truck.

I also have a 88 ranger with the 2.0. I have a Holley 5200 carb and a scca racing intake off of a pinto i will be using. Can u tell me what year ranger you got your headers off of. I have been trying to find this type and haven't had much luck at all. Thanks

The "shorty' header was on 93 and up Rangers and Mazda 2300's....I got mine off a 93 Mazda...

There are some who say NOT to upgrade to the shorty header...mine runs better and is lighter so I'm happy with it...but the old header was, apparently, a good flow...

ok, I still haven't had much luck online finding this type of shorty header. Everything i have found has been cast. The main reason i wanted those headers is because my emissions hard lines are pretty much trashed. And i didn't want to just plug them.Plus i like the way they look. I am gona hit some of the local pick n pay junkyards up and see what i can come up with.

I like the way they look too...and plugging in the EGR is not a problem...just needs a bit of pipe mods....

The truck I got mine from had many rotted bolts and I ended up buying new manifold bolts from Ford...it was expensive but worth it...took me an hour or so to remove it but only 30 minutes to install...you'll need a new gasket probably but that's a safe guard...

I have pics of my EGR hookup...it's a bit lower than the original manifold but a bit of creative pipe modding would do the trick...

Found this on ebay its for an aerostar but they share parts with rangers #150530768165 $40.00 :dunno:

Thanks these look nice. Started stripping my motor down today and noticed the pinto intake my friend gave me isn't going to fit. Anybody know of a good intake i can use.I Don't want to reuse mine its in really bad shape and it has a small crack where the vacuum line coming from the pcv valve hooks up. I found some on esslingers web site. And i have the option of using a intake from a 81 mustang from the local junkyard. The best intake i have found is a racer walsh intake made for the 2.0 ranger with a webber down draft. But its pretty pricey but its also chrome.:headbang:

sorry I didn't get back too your question sooner but mark answered it.
one thing to remember is that some of the 2.0ltr heads have and air injection port(egr crap)on the bottom of each exhaust port.
I just threaded the holes and then put a short pipe plug in each one. I wasn't worried about the plugs backing out cause the header flange blocks them from coming out.

You can use a Fuel Injection intake with an adapter...86 is apparently the best...

My intake came from a 78 Mustang II...with the carb (Motorcraft 5200) and it works great...if the 81 has a carb go for it...may have to rebuild the carb but that's not too much of a biggie...

But there are a number of options...even a 4 bbl...but unless you plan on doing some work on the head and the block I'd stay away from that...

The Pinto 2.0 is an entirely different engine...and parts, as you found, do not swap...I ended up replacing the 2.0 block with an 87 2.3 from a Ranger and used an 89 Mustang head (D-port) with the 78 intake...it was a D-port also...

also for an update on this thread I ended up having to replace the muffler cause the tailpipe flange coming out of the muffler broke loose and the tailpipe rotated down and hit the leaf spring.
I went over to the local muffler shop to see what they had and they didn't have a new performance muffler but they did have a really nice used hooker aero chamber 2 1/2" inlet, 2 1/2" outlet to replace the broken cherry bomb.
The drone went away, the tone is close to the same but a little bit deeper and it really sounds good with the cam I used.:headbang:
Thanks
Duane

Glad you said something i did not notice these small holes under the exhaust ports til you said something. What size pipe plugs did you use for these holes. As for the head i planned on just rebuilding it to factory specs.I already have have a holley 5200 carb i would like to use that i rebuilt to factory specs it came off a 79 mustang with a electric choke. I think i will check the 81 mustang intake out at the junkyard on Monday. I am just trying to do this as nice and clean as possible and do away with pretty much all the emissions and vacuum lines minus the vacuum advance for the dizzy.
