87 ranger idles but dies in ddrive

Hey, good friend of mine has a 1987 ranger 2wd 4cyl that idles just fine but as soon as she puts it in gear it jolts to a stop and dies, i think its a tranny problem an i know very little about those, help!

Is it carbed or fuel injected?

I had a vacuum leak on mine when I first set it up and it would idle all day long...put it in gear and it died...so check for vac leaks...and let us know what fuel system it uses...makes a bit of a difference on how to proceed...
