'86 BII A4LD to M50D-R1 transmission swap.....

sweet!

will the 4.0 flywheel bolts work on teh 2.9?

will the 4.0 flexplate (the plate between the engine and transmission) work on the 2.9? i don't see why it wouldn't since the bell housing is the same...

what about the starter.....with a 4.0 transmission and flywheel, do i use the 4.0 starter? with a FM146 and a 4.0 flywheel, do i use the 4.0 starter or the 2.9 starter?

if you are using a 4.0 clutch, you need a 4.0 manual starter. you can get by with your old one for a while if you have to by spacing it out from the trans with longer bolts and some washers... but get the one you need anyways.

sweet....i will get a 4.0 starter!

all the crank and pressure plate bolts are the same.use the block off plate from the tranny that u decide to run,but you might need to open up the starter hole a small amount.grab the jumper harness from the relay on the fender down to the MT 4.0l starter when you get one.the 4.0l clutch upgrade is well worth it and easy.the tech library has more info on it

do you have a picture of the relay?

i wanted it to be factory but you can also move the starter hot lead to the left terminal(always hot) and run a smaller wire down to the solenoid from the right terminal(hot in start position) instead of replacing your positive battery cable.

... which is a nice description of early factory 4.0L cranking circuits.

so i need to get the jumper wire on the 4.0's starter solenoid? i don't really follow....

run constant hot to the starter and the little wire is the keyed power.i showed a pic of the factory cable but you can move the big cable on your truck and add a small one.if in doubt get wiring diagrams.

the reverse lights are i believe this.: yellow w/black stripe and black w/yellow stripe this is the plug i think is reverse sensor, and i dunno if 2.9 and 4.0 are the same. this is 2.9:
