1985 BII A4LD Trans Leak

Be sure your torque converter is fully seated in the trans. That can cause issues when reinstalling and also cook a new transmission rather quickly..

Yes that has been one of my concerns too. I know it was seated correctly when I had it on the ground, but with all the wrestling I'm afraid I'll pull it forward by accident.

I will say the hump on the bottom of the trans pan is not helping anything!

If you're using a transmission jack sometimes it helps to have 2x4's on either side of that hump to level it out. Those pans are never easy to work around, just makes everything want to roll sideways.

I can verify this as fact!

I had thought about the 2x4's. I will make something to help out.

Like I said, I'm going to step back and work my way through this the right way.

No updates?

I'm going to try and work on it today. I had some buds come into town for our Dove opener in TN. Got a little preoccupied lol.

I'll let you know how it goes today.

This was worth quoting again.

Got to work on the BII today.

I went ahead and removed the flexplate and spacer to replace the rear main seal. Looks like the old one was leaking.

I also installed the sonnax spacer. I didn't notice much difference between the one that was already installed. They both looked machined out of decent metal.

Then I removed the transfer case so I could install the transmission.

It still wouldn't go. I knew I was doing something wrong.

Then i decided to let gravity help install the torque converter. With the transfer case off i picked up the trans and set it on its end bell housing side up.

And you guessed it, I never got the torque converter fully seated before. I don't know how you could have done it without gravity.

After that I was able to get the trans back in minus the torque converter nuts. Then I installed the the transfer case, and got the trans cross member and the trans mount installed. I was on a roll this afternoon.

I just have the shifters, starter, torque converter nuts, and drive shafts and she will be ready to roll!

I hope to not have to take any ATF baths anymore. I hate getting that shit in my hair.

I'd use some blue threadlocker on those torque converter nuts..

Hello all,

You all have been a great forum so far, now I need some assistance again.

I have a pretty severe trans leak. It appears to be coming from in between the bell housing and engine block. Maybe the front trans seal behind the torque converter?

I haven't dove in too much yet, just got it running over the weekend, but i'm cutting to the chase with this one and posting video for advice.

See the two youtube videos below:

Any advice is welcomed, not sure if i want to tackle this at home or not.
Pull the trans out and rebuild it

Spent some time in the garage last night. Got the shifters installed, driveshafts installed, torque converter nuts (with blue thread locker), put the dipstick tube back in, changed the filter and trans pan seal, then put in a gallon of trans fluid to start with.

All I have left when I get home today is to hook up the exhaust midpipe with the flange, hook up the vacuum line to the trans, and hook the battery back up.

I plan on driving it out of the garage tonight.

I went and got the title transfered to my name today and got my new plates. I insured it last week, so it should be good to go for a test drive!

Wish me luck!

Well I got it all back together last night and drove it. No leaks so far!
The main vacuum lines to the trans got knocked loose and vibrates a little, but i can fix that.

Only issue now is I have a very high idle on the engine. I'll have too look into that and start a new thread.
