'85 Ranger Restomod


Another option, I hear it was a real popular one with my mother when dad did it, is to steal the parts needed from her vehicle to fix the vehicle he was working on.

It has a little rinky dink agm thing. No, not touching that, it was a rough enough day already.
 
Reminds me of when dad worked for the phone company & his work van was being serviced, he brought home a fleet vehicle, brand new plymouth acclaim I think (yes, was quite a few years back) The battery in my ‘88 was about spent, I pulled it, painted it flat black & swapped it with the mopar battery, the ranger battery did start the car the next day so that was good, think the ranger still had the mopar battery in it when I retired it. Im not saying to do something nefarious like that, but you might find a decent trade-in battery to swap. A core is a core, see what your load tester says .

A year ago that would have been great. Lots of diesel Ford's use two of them. One tests bad and two are an easy sale so you end up with a used one that really never tested bad at all.

But in semi truck land... I don't really know why we stock them. Nobody ever comes to us for little automotive batteries.

In other news I stuck the charger on it, pumped the pedal once to set the choke... and at 34* it started really well. It would have been a decent crank time for a cold EFI vehicle. I let it run for awhile and checked, the choke was starting to come open. I went and fed the sheep and birds, backed it back into the garage for weather we have coming in and by then it was fully open.

Brought a new battery home for the beast. Stuck it in, pumped the pedal once, crossed my toes and it lit right off. Absolutely perfect, I could not expect better out of a new truck.

Just in time to get this thing figured out as I nailed a buck with my F-150 on the way home... so it will get to pull dd duty at some point.



 
Ran a couple errands in it today, I think we have the starting issue kicked. Started half a dozen times, started perfect every time.

Did you run it tthrough a creek to see if you got that fixed as well?

I know I haven't.

I have the new tube of silicone to fix it but since I won't have any use for the silicone until spring and I don't know if I will ever even do a river crossing again I am waiting to open it.

Because once open the tubes dry out quick

That they do. Though I have gotten lucky and have been able to use a tube or two more than once. Even more than twice, once in a blue moon.
 
The thing was running great, then New Years Eve I was running around and it kept getting stuck on high idle.

Tried to clean things up... no change. Everything was free, the choke pulloff just wasn't doing it, it would only pull the choke open about a quarter of an inch which wasn't enough to get the high idle stuff out of the way to idle normal. So for the day my '150 went in for an estimate I just adjusted the choke clear back to it was always open. Surprisingly started very well yet.

I got a new pulloff tonight.

It is factory Edelbrock, looks/feels a lot cheaper than the original one that came with the carb.



But so far it seems to work better.

 
What's that thing going to do when you get it to 12,800 feet in the Rocky's?
 
Bring an extra set of spark plugs and run low octane. :3gears:
 
I'll pull him up the hills and he can coast downhill. It'll be ok.
 
Not ideal but I think I have it worked out how to keep the carb happy with elevation.

Basically everything but the truck is in the way and not seeming to get better though.
