'85 Ranger Restomod

Did you sort it out yet?

It finally crawled out of its burrow. :D

I got it timed, I think it ended up a tooth off with the wires rotated around the cap one click. Kinda funny dad timed it by ear as I was starting it, he had it at 9.5 degrees when I got out the timing light to dial it in (and set it to the standard of 10)

I got it cleaned out and took it up town to get some gas and clean the windshield so I can see where I am going, the bottom end is noticably diminished from what it was the standard cam... I haven't played with the carb aside from the idle but as it sits I kinda almost regret ditching it for an HO cam.

Otherwise it runs pretty good, I got a little overzelous with the luboil when I had the heads off and it smoked like a freight train until it got that burnt off but otherwise at the moment I think it is good to go.

The new (to me) Explorer power steering pump feels very good, I very much like it better than any other pump that I have had on the truck.

If I let it sit and idle the efan will kick on, just driving around I never heard a peep out of it and it ran a lot cooler than it used to with just the efan. I think the flexfan was a very good addition.

Now I just need to do some minor tweaks to the engine, detail and wax the truck to get it ready for my club's car show this coming weekend. :D

Looks good! Didn't you go from E6's to E7's? That would be a change in low end grunt too.

Yeah, since they were dirt common on F-150's I wouldn't think they would hurt it too bad though.

Maybe you can bump your timing up a bit? I run mine at 13 btdc and it doesn't ping with 85 octane.

I was going to give it a little bit to work things out, I doubt the old gas is helping much either not to mention I still need to dial in the carb.

It's a dang nice looking pickup. Those tires look awesome on it. I wouldn't change a thing about the looks. The first gen has a special place in my heart. I just wish they had better factory motor options.

Over all does out feel like it has 200hp? Keep updated on it, I was thinking about going to e7 heads one day but if you lose your bottom end, I may look for a different kind.

It takes a really good picture for what it is in real life.

I would love to put straighter/less rusty sheetmetal on it and repaint it a similar green (but with a clearcoat) and have a tan bedliner two tone along the lower bodyline.

I drove it about 5 miles in town at about 10:00PM so I didn't really get into it much, it felt like it was really trying to redeem its bottom end once it got moving. It has been 5 months since I drove the other setup so it may be better in my memory than it really was and I haven't done a thing to the carb yet aside from set the idle.

You might also want to look into the "Sixltre" 5.0L ignition mod.

Basically a tune up with a hotter coil and more plug gap and different timing?

I used to run .055 gap on my 2.8, it really helped with oil fouling... the stock (likely original) coil and standard replacement wires held up fine.

I find it amusing that rather than just shortening his plug wires (the boots slide off and new ends are less than a dollar apiece) he got a new set of wires.

I can't help but wonder if most of the improvement in that "mod" is replacing stuff that needed replaced in the first place.

FWIW, I have an MSD Street Fire coil on my Mustang. I didn't notice anything different. If your cap/rotor and wires are fairly new, the biggest difference in that "mod" that you would notice is the change in gap. Mine are .054" from the factory though, I don't know what that Bronco would be.

I drove it to work today... not sure what its deal was the other night but it was a totally different beast.

I may have lost barely a tad off the bottom end, it is by no means lacking. When I get into it... it wants to get gone in a very big hurry.

I am going nuts right now, I want to drive it more... :icon_twisted:
