Saved an '84 (2.3) from the scrap heap. Need some advice on getting it roadworthy on a very limited budget. It has a bad block but a good head (last mechanic lost a carb nut which found its way into #4 cyl.). I have an '85 2.3 with a bad head but a good block (blown head gasket between 3 & 4). I want to chase all threads on the good block and replace the oil pump. The newer block has an aluminum oil pan. All pump listings say "not for aluminum pan". Is there a special pump for this pan? I will be resurfacing the head. How important is replacing the head bolts? Should I replace the freeze plugs while its on the engine stand? Is there a metal outer timing belt cover available? Should I drop a 5-speed tranny in or keep the 4-speed? I have noticed many posts about putting more power under the hood (swaps and mods) but have not found many, if any, posts about squeezing every mile out of a gallon of gas. This Ranger will be a daily driver so my '92 F-150 (5.8) can finally rest up for the big jobs. I am open to any suggestions/replies.
