Can someone please help...

I need to get this thing runnin right... CA Smog coming up...

On an 83 you have smog? it's over 20 yrs old............ I know in texas where I used to live less than 2 older than 20 was safety only. But ect out of range you need to make sure you get a 5 volt to the ect and check the resistance of the ect itself.

Yup Smog... lol... im in CA man! i think they go back till 74 i believe dont quote me lol!

Thats the thing though...
Im pretty new to all this stuff...

Just rebuilt my 2nd carb got it on and decided to see if codes would come up

I have the odb and book so i know what they are

But how would i fix the 2 that i mentioned...

I mean out of range? Whats that mean? how can i fix that?

Thanks metalbreakdown for the response

menas the range of the sensor usually -38 to +330 or so has been exceeded. A shorted wiring or sensor will make it think it's overly hot so 330+. A completly open sensor or wiring will make it think it's cold -40. The sensor recieves 5volts from the computer, goes through the sensor to the internal ground in the comp. You can unplug the sensor connector on the ect with a voltmeter probe both sides of the connector at once with the key on and it should read 5 volts or very close. If it does, measure the resistance of the sensor and compare to specs at that temperature.

When I first saw the post I thought it threw 83 codes... I was thinking, dayum!!!

Sick thanks joey!

I just bought this bad boy and am doing everything i can before dreaded smog and i want to get it running nice and smooth... i think this truck was abused lol!

But yesterday after i threw my rebuilt carb up it was running REAL HOT for the 1st time... i maybe drove the car 10 times all together bought it a week and 1/2 ago...

Ill do the voltmeter today! but im wondering if it did exceed 300? and if its not 5 volts then what?

PS My truck has really high idle...

I would like to knock this thing out today...

Im pretty sure the plunger thing thats supposed to touch the throttle is faulty...

I started it and that thing didnt move to touch the throttle!

What plunger? The choke pulloff? Or the accelerator pump?

Let me rephrase that...

The ICS i think the motor on the driver side that i think is supposed to hit the throttle...

not sure?

Atleast move upon startup?

Id like to nail the
ECT & TPS Out of range problem out today so if any of you guys know how i will appreciate it greatly!

I am not really sure how to help you fix this since all my emissions stuff is gone and I did the duraspark conversion on my 2.8. The link below is a pretty good place to start troubleshooting carb problems. I think you have a vacuum leak somewhere else and all the electronics are making it idle real fast but that's about the best I can tell you without being under the hood.
