83 Codes?

Id like to nail the
ECT & TPS Out of range problem out today so if any of you guys know how i will appreciate it greatly!

ECT - engine coolant temp sensor, located in thermostat housing

TPS - throttle position sensor, located on the passenger side of the carb

Test these with a multimeter...I believe you are testing for resistance. I think a Haynes or Chiltons manual might have correct specs for these

While im here at work i might as well ask...

But im pretty sure the chiltons doesnt tell you how to work the code!

Just give you general info about them

So has anyone come across these codes and or problems... or know enough about them

to tell me how i can go about this...

I was gonna take my truck out this weekend for the 1st time... and after rebuilding the

carb and putting it back on ther car runs smoother...

But at high idle and pretty hot... im sure if my temp guage worked it would be over the normal mark!

If it throws a code about a certain sensor, you need to test that sensor to make sure it's working properly..with the multimeter. Also just because it throws a code doesn't mean that the specified sensor is bad, it could be something completely different that is connected to that sensor in some way.

I don't think you're going to find a fix by sorting through codes in this situation. In a fuel injected vehicle, yeah maybe, but not with a computer controlled carb. There are about a million more things that could go wrong, hence why people do the duraspark conversion, but I'm sure that's not legal there.

Those stupid temperature sensers are about $40 too... I got one right before I threw in the towel and Durasparked it.

Dang...
So what would you suggest me doing?

Grab all the codes and go through the list testing things to see if they work?

I know i tested the TPS while rebuilding the carb i used the voltmeter to see if it fluctuated while pressing the throttle and it worked i saw fluctautions so it was working...

But other than that what are my options here?

Edit: And nope CA has strict emissions and cant duraspark... I WISH!

The tps bieng stuck on -40 willk cause a high idle, tps out of range could cause high idle and or rolling idle or stumble on accel... I suggest you do aformentioned for the ect and then report back your findings, then on to tps.

So start what on ECT? sorry like i said am new and trying to learn here! you know?

And then i tested the TPS and i looked for fluctuations in volts...

Whats the standard way of testing?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but wheres my ECT?

I replaced what i thought was the ect becuase i was trying to fix my guage but the pic showed from fordfuelinjected shows 2 pins... mine had 1?

And lets say it was stuck at -40?

How is that possible and how do i fix/test for that?

if you read my former post it will describe how to test the ect an ect has 2 wires the sender for the gauge is a single wire

Thanks Joey...
But wheres my ECT?

And how do i fix or find out if the TPS is at -40?

Im sorry im new man and a i appreciate you guys being patient...

my plan is to get off work and have some sort of a game plan to get this thing nailed out!

1st thing start flippin through my chiltons... and get the exact codes post em on here and see what you guys say to do...

Again thanks id be stuck if you guys werent around!

But wheres my ECT?

See my post at the top of this page...located in thermosat housing, top of motor, there are two sensors. One has just one wire, that is NOT the ECT. The one with a big plug is the ECT.

Gotcha... whatever that 1 pi n thing is i replaced that thinking it would help my guage out...

Guess it didnt lol

Thanks Shram
