If you had a limited slip 8.8 with 4.10's, what is necessary to swap in open 3.73's? Any information and explanation for dummies would be greatly appreciated.

The gears are independent of the carrier so you can keep the LS if you wanted to. But really if you have to ask you should probably have a pro setup the gears. They need to be setup dead nuts exact with some special tools and patience. I read around a LOT before I attempted it.

do you mean what do you have to do to swap in another axle or just gears?

Just gears, I'm swapping in a whole 8.8 out of a newer ranger into my rig, but I'm probably going to need 3.73's to match my front end.

I understand about the setup, and won't be tackling that alone, but I was under the impression that a limited slip carrier was different than an open carrier, but could easily have misunderstood. Just trying to clarify. So it is not a problem to put 3.73 ring/pinion from an open dif onto a limited slip?

Again, I apologize for being dense on this subject, haven't had much experience on the dif, thanks for the information.

yea a l/s carrier is different but just put the 3.73s on the l/s carrier

To help clarify better, the L/S and open carrier itself is different, but the ring gear will fit on either carrier. The only time you need to specify which carrier you have is when you get a locker. You need to know which carrier you have and what spline count your axles are

Just keep the 4.10's in the back and swap out the front pic for one with 4.10's setup in it.

Thats a fair possibility, but I'm finding 4.10's for the Dana 35 to be kinda scarce, and 3.73's for the 8.8 to be quite common. I also am quite happy with the 3.73 ratio, even if I bumped up a tire size, as I've got plenty of power and this rig isn't really the rock crawler type (low range is plenty slow for me at this point). Good suggestion though. Is it easier to swap 4.10's into the dana 35?

it takes about an hour to do gears in the rear axle, the front takes about 2 hours with a lift installed, about 3 hours with factory suspension

I wasnt thinking time wise, I was thinking more about the fact that you can just swap the D35 whole housing with the gears already setup in it.

thats what i did when i went from 3.27 gears to 3.73 it took me about 4 hours to do

IDK how long it took me, because I did it when I did the lift, so I already had the beams off.

If you do end up pulling the front diff do yourself a favor make the c-clip eliminator.
