Hi, i just bought my 93 3.0l Supercab XLT with 7.5 3.73 lsd for $700

i was told the diff was going out, but i like a project and couldn't afford anything in perfect running condition.

i drove a couple miles for a few days to see what the symptoms were, i can't hear anything over the straight exhaust that ends right at cab, but there was clunk 2 separate times of i tried to give it too much gas at once.

i went to move my truck after it rained and knew there was a problem. You can see in the pics the s spring was shattered in the case.

i cleaned out all the metal particles and noticed the spider gears look very worn.

I'm on a super tight budget and can't do a rebuild at the moment.

My question is can i drive it the way it is with no preload or try just replacing the s spring with the with gears?

i can't find lsd spider gears for the 7.5

i had to move it in the parking lot 20 ft to work on it and there was a small incline and i had to put it in 2nd with my foot to the floor just to get it to budge, this worries me become i live up a pretty step hill and worry what winter will be like if dry traction is that bad.

Also, it's worth noting the center driveshaft bearing is completely shot, and the pinion seal has a leak. Not sure if the bearing being busted could caused this whole chain of events or not.

This is my first ranger and last two vehicles were a Dodge b350 and half ton Silverado.

Any cost effective ideas would be appreciated, i have the skills to work on almost anything, but I'm working on gravel on my back and didn't currently have a welder or money for some other specialty tools in order to completely rebuild the diff.

if the ring and pinion are fine you can gut a better shape one at the junkyard to get by generally.

So… personally, I’d go looking at junkyards and people parting out trucks and get a whole Ranger axle. My Choptop had a limited slip 7.5” and I blew everything apart in there. I got an 8.8” with the correct gears and upgraded. Any Ranger rear axle will bolt in.

Honestly the spiders look fine? They are all ugly no matter what shape they come in it seems. If your limited slip is working they shouldn't turn much anyway :devilish: I'm sure preload helps, but I have seen anecdotes of 8.8 owners not able to get the clip in on higher numerical ratios and doing without.

A whole axle.
This is the easy button. Should be able to find another axle with the correct gears and swap it over. See if you can grab the center bearing too.

Keep an eye on the bolt pattern on the pinion to ujoint. There are slight differences. Tho you can (carefully measure first) drill new holes.

I’ve seen what I call small and large patterns on the rear axle pinion yoke and they come in 1310 and 1330 U-joint. I have a collection of driveshaft yokes in those different ones so I just pick the right pattern and joint size and throw the old one in my collection for my next swap, lol
