Ok, I've looked at all the posts and still want to ask. What is better for the front and rear on an 02 4 door? I've seen the ones that are "Ford/Mazda" stamped. Pioneers I think, are they any good? or are they just factory replacements? I want good sound, I don't need tons of bass just enough to shake the mirrors a little. Let me know I really want to upgrade today.

I know Crutchfield says 6x8's bolt up, but is there any cutting involved? If not then upgrading from factory 5x7's will I have enough wattage from the factory head unit to push them? Like I said I just want to shake the mirrors a little. Just a little more than the factory setup.

Speakers aren't made for bass, they are made for mids and highs, so if you want bass get an amp and a sub, I run 5x7 pioneers front and back and they sound good but no bass which is why I have a 12" sub and 600 watt amp, the better quality a speaker is the less its gunna have bass

That is why I posted the thread the way I did "I want good sound". I have no desire to fill up my ext. cab with speakers, it defeats the purpose for me buying it. But, thanks for your reply.

5x7s and 6x8s are so close they're almost the same thing. In fact, a lot speakers have "5x7/6x8" as the size because they can be used in either application. In general, bigger speakers give better bass. In order to produce good bass, a speaker needs to be able to move a large amount of air at once. The larger the speaker cone, the more air can be moved. That being said, 6x8s will not necessarily give better bass than 5x7s because like I said before, they're practically the same. In that case it just comes down to the quality of the speaker.
I know you said you don't want to fill your truck up with subwoofers, which I understand and agree with completely, but there are small subwoofers that don't use much room at all, and some of them can even fit under your driver seat, using up virtually no space at all. I think it would be worth considering if you're looking for more bass.

you can get some nice sound out of some 5x7/6x8's. slap em in and play with the settings on your deck. if they sound sloppy then you should try setting the hpf at 63hz. anything below 63hz should be handled by a subwoofer. otherwise its all about the installation. anyone can slap in a set of speakers and get a decent improvement. but if you want to get the most out of em then you should consider sealing your doors. then add a layer or two of some quality sound deadener on the inner and outer door skin. the deadening will cut road noise and by sealing up your doors your pretty much using your doors as an enlosure. that will help alot with the midbass.

i just cut holes in my doors and put alpine type s 6x9's in them. i got decent bass with them. but the two 12"s behind my seat handle all the bass. i wish the alpines had adjustable tweeters like my old 6x8 infinity's did tho

he's got factory pockets in the doors that are 6x9.... no cutting necessary or recommended!

x2

just go by a good set of 6x9's and you will be happy. you can run them off the deck.

for a good set your looking at $100+ range per set

i got street edge 6x9s in my ranger with 4'' bluapunkts in the dash. sounds like i got subs in there. but not too much bass to where you cant here the mids and highs. altho i got a pioneer deh-p4600mp headunit pushing it all.

Well, for one his 02 uses 5x7's ( or 6x8's they are the same) in the doors. 6.5's can fit with a bracket. I have 6.5's in my doors and 5x7's in the rear. I used JL audio speakers and I love the way they sound. Great mid bass with the 5x7's. As for the sound deadener, I'm putting some in mine soon. It helps to reduce resonating noises and project better sound into the cab rather than the doors. just a tip, the better the head unit you have the better the sound quality you get out of your speakers. Get one that has a good eq in it if you do.

if he's not using an amp those its not going to matter much if he uses jl's or pioneers. As long as they arent sony xplodes he'll be fine.

Amp or not different brand speakers will sound different. I didn't say he has to use JL. They are just what I think sounded the best to me. If someone wants to know the sound differences they should go to a local stereo shop and listen to different speakers and see what they like best. Pioneer might sound great to you but I don't care for them and yes I have owned some pioneers too.
