I've got my first ever tear down and rebuild on a 2003 4.0l V6 4x4 automatic Ranger. I've done several 305, 350, and ls rebuilds and major repairs on other vehicles so I'm fairly confident in my ability to work on this transmission. However, since I am new to transmissions I'm having a hard time figuring out what failed on this transmission. I think the sprag? The little bearing near the overdrive planetary was tore up and missing some little rollers. Now is the OD planetary supposed to spin in both ways, one way, or at all? I have it all tore down and when I put the short shaft that came out of it back in and try to turn it either way it won't move. If I take the gear that meshes into the gears on the planetary, I can't spin it either? Is this normal or is the planetary bad? I have another transmission I can put into the truck, but I was hoping to tackle my first rebuild and just need some help figuring out what all I need to replace. I have all new bands and a bunch of other stuff but not this planetary. I also have a couple other parts with significant bluing looking like they got very hot. Could something near these be why it went out? I have no clue on what it was doing before it went out. I bought the truck with the trans pulled in the passenger seat but still assembled.
