So I think I should know this by now, but I’m having trouble figuring it out...

Engine harness was a 2000 Explorer and plugged into the 2000 Ranger. Don’t believe I need to do anything there. Please correct me if I’m wrong on that.

My problem is that I ended up using a 98 Explorer starting/charging harness. The plug that ends up under the brake master cylinder is a rectangular plug with 6 wires and the Ranger has a round black plug with 6 wires and I thought I just had to match wire colors, but there’s some discrepancy. Tried looking at the Ranger I did for dad and his has different wiring than mine.

Tried to do my best with wire colors but I’m partial colorblind so all colors may not be exactly correct but should be close enough. My drawings of the plugs were looking in at the connection end with the catch on top. I’m a little confused because the Ranger harness had what appeared to be two thick yellow/white and the Explorer harness had one thick yellow/green(maybe light blue?). I know what two wires go to the A/C clutch, that’s easy enough and I’m pretty sure the one thick yellow/whatever wire goes to the starter solenoid but I don’t know if it gets hooked to one or both of the Ranger yellow/white wires. Not exactly sure what the rest of the wires are for and what gets hooked to what. Hopefully someone can shed some light on it. In the interim, I’m going to see if I can figure out where I stashed the Ranger harness…

Has anyone ever took a sawzall and cut the rear roof off an explorer with a v8? Sounds like it would be easier than these engine swaps into a ranger with all the wiring problems.

Well, I burned far more brain cells than I wanted to, but I ended up digging out the Ranger harness and after a lot of tracing wires… I think I got it. Only 3 wires on the Explorer harness matter to me because the other three I have nothing to hook to, they go to the oil level sensor in the pan. There’s no wires on the Ranger plug for that. Two of the wires on the Ranger harness are for the same thing. The other two are for the high pressure sensor on the A/C which the Explorer didn’t have, if I remember right, they just need hooked to each other to close the circuit and make the A/C work. @holyford86

I have definitely cut the back roof off an xploder, and wheeled it. It was not a v8 tho. Im not sure on your wiring situation tho. Take your time and get it right. My v8 swap was running in a few months, but it took a lil over a year to get most everything sorted out the way I wanted it. Definitely worth it in the end!
