Im cleaning up my 5.0 for the swap and I'm going with an elect fan but I can't get the old fan clutch off. Since the water pump spins opposite of the crank, are the threads left handed? The other threads only addressed the 3.0 and 4.0 engines so I didn't know if it was the same procedure. Any help would be appreciated.

Airhammer with chisel bit works the best.

They make a special tool for removing it. You should be able to borrow it from autozone. The one I bought is similar to this one.

You can rent a fan clutch tool at Autozone. I just bought one though.

Trust me....the airhammer and chisel bit is the easiest. Since he is going with an electric fan.

I just use a wrench that fits it and smack it a couple times with my hand and it comes off. I have never really had one fight much as long as I have it on an engine with the belts still on it.

My 5.0 Explorer one was too tight to get a regular wrench on, I had to borrow the tool (wrench made out of flat strap iron) but it didn't fight me much either.

I forgot to mention that it's from a 97 exploder and the belt is off of it. It seems to be froze on there. I got a crescent wrench on it and held it in place with another wrench and smacked it but no go...have to try again tomorrow. Thx for the input guys I'll let you know how it goes, I may go with the saws all...

I forgot to ask, is it right or left hand threads....prob left hand?

Standard threads, the WP turns the opposite way from the normal way (which requires reverse threads)

I was getting a new pump so I stuck the impeller in a bench vice and slipped off the fan clutch with the tool. Super easy, no problem.

All I was after was the pulley and the pump to turn in for the core. :D

Ths guys for the help. Used an old alt bracket and bolted it to the wp and gave it a wack with the crescent wrench and it came of easy. tyvm for the help.

lol..........In 2001 I went to work for a ford dealership.I was mostly working at Honda dealerships before then.
I was looking for some wrenches to take off the fan and.........one guy walks up with an air hammer and bit about a foot long.Zips it off in about 2 seconds.
I bought one off the tool truck,,air hammer ,one foot long chisel(the one that does not spin)
Like "Explorin94" said works great.:icon_thumby:

what fan did you end up using with the 5.0...Im struggling to find one that will fit and flow good.

I used a dual fan setup from a 2001 Mercury Cougar, similar to the Focus and Contour fans I believe.

I made my own brackets and used a Flex-A-Lite VSC to control it. Fits perfect and is more than enough to keep my 5.0 cool.
