When you try to remove the fan clutch, the pulley very likely slips against the belt so nothing loosens -- even when you remember that you're trying to loosen a left-hand thread. I've seen suggestions to buy a special tool, but I found another way using the parts on hand: simply re-route the belt. This link to a belt-routing schematic might work. If not, I'll describe it. Take the belt off the crank and also off the (upper) idler pulley, and gather the slack up above the engine. On the part of the belt between the alternator and the water pump, push inward and bring it around the A/C. Now, with the tensioner fully torqued, push the belt back under the idler -- it's a tight fit now -- and release the tensioner. This works because the belt is tighter and because it makes a lot of contact with the water pump pulley. This photo may help.
