Would an engine like this be a solid choice for the swap?

You’re going to need a lot more than just the engine. Yes, a 97 or older Explorer would be most correct for your swap, but you will need a 5.0 compatible transmission (the Explorer automatic behind them, the 4R70 is acceptable for autos) otherwise you’ll need to source a manual. Explorers were AWD for the 5.0 t-case, so you’ll have to pick a compatible t-case. You will also need all of the Explorer wiring and the computer. There’s going to be a ton of splicing to do and you’re going to have an issue with where the computer mounts.

Lots of info in the tech pages and the V-8 swaps forum. Which is where these 5.0 threads are going to end up soon.

thank-you for the information. I think an automatic may be the way to go

Manuals can be found, you just need one for a Ford small block bellhousing bolt pattern.

Your biggest challenge will be wiring unless you go carbed. Your other option would be to go to like a Micro-squirt or one of the other aftermarket ECU systems. Still going to have a bit of wiring, nothing related to the 5.0 plugs into the first gen or second gen trucks, other than the motor mounts.
