4X4 Ranger Edge Standard cab 4.0??

i have seen some 4.0 5 spd reg cabs rangers around 01-04 models.not too common around here, but i have seen them.i used to own a 2001 3.0 auto ext cab 4wd with a 3" BL and 33x12.50s.I must say it wasnt the fastest one in town, but it did run very good and never gave me a lick of trouble. i currently own a 3.0 reg cab 5 spd splash 4wd. I like the 5 spd way more than the auto i used to own. Wish i woulda kept the truck, i feel as if im outgrowing the splash heh. i'm 6'2 maybe a little taller, and it just seems to be getting smaller and smaller for me. i wish i could go back and keep a hold of my old 01 ranger instand of trading it in on a powerstroke. Good luck with your search, as many of said, they are out there, just gotta look hard. kind of like the elusive missing bolt you swore its on the workbench but no where to be found, then when you stop looking BANG! its right under your nose :D

Yeah, my buddy keeps telling me I should quit looking and the exact truck I want would pop up. I disagree completely though. I figure if I keep scouring the net plus local lots, then I have a way better chance of finding a good deal in the end. I will not overpay, and I have a pretty darn good idea of the value on these trucks.

If I do settle for a 3.0 it WILL bve a manual. No two ways about it.

I too have the desire to punch most salesmen.. :headbang:

Well I found this truck and although it's not a manual like I wanted, the price is almost too good to pass up. Clean carfax report. 2001 model, 4.0 liter, 56,000 miles, 4x4 for $7495.

I wonder how apparent any gains would be from a tuner changing the shift points, limiter, and firmness??

Check it out..

No comments huh? I was curious about this year of Ranger having transmission issues (overdrive - 2nd/3rd shift) as well as the transfer case shifting problems?

I may just let it sell, seeing as the rental car company gave me the run around and I've had a hard time trying to go get it..

Damn Bird, I guess I missed your post on 7/13. With as long and hard as you've been searching, if it's still available, I'd jump all over it. It may be as close as you're going to get what you're looking for. That truck is gorgeous!

Have you heard much about the transmissions on these going bad at around 30,000 to 50,000 miles? Something to do with the overdrive? I've read about it all over the net but I'm skeptical as to how common it really is.

I know I should jump on it for $7295... Although it does need the rear bumper re-sprayed and new tires..

Here's one place of the many on the net that I've read about people having serious issues. Something about a valve body being redesigned by Ford and problems going away in 2005 and later trucks. Having 2nd to 3rd gear shifts that are very hard, etc.. Other have had band problems in the tranny.

23 pages of info here..

I'm sure this is covered elsewhere on this site but I was hoping people that have had these problems might chime in and tell me not to buy a certain year.. What to check, etc...

I hope you don't start having issues either!! :icon_thumby:

Don't worry about it. Alot of folks that have issues with the auto...is mostly due to lack of service. Not changing the fluid like they should.

There's millions of these trucks with this trans not having issues out there....where the issues start in usually comes with people adding 35's or 33's and not regearing....causing excessive slipping of clutches in the trans. That being said....two of my buddys with 35's and autos W/O REGEARING, got 125k out of their autos...with about 30k of it's life running the 35's and no gear change.

Tuner Tuner Tuner Tuner Tuner Tuner!!!!!!! Best mod anyone can do to their truck is going for an Xcal2 or 3 with tunes from Rogue Performance. Change shift points, changes in the timing of the engine and other such paramaters...makes a huge difference in both performance and mileage.

I'd get that truck man....it looks very clean and it's a very rare truck. It needs tires? Seems like the perfect time to throw on some 32x11.50s on 15x8's to me!

After all of the issues keeping me from going to get it, I'm just super frustrated. I need to go see the ex and put it where the sun don't shine I guess.. :clapping:

The rental car places are crap. I won't get into that story. Now I'm having trouble getting anyone to help me get to the airport. I'll figure out something soon I hope. I'll have to wait until he responds to my last email. I told him to sell it if he wanted, because I was having major troubles getting there. He said (salesman/private owner though) he has two other people interested in the truck, so I told him to let it go. I think he was bullsh#*#ng me though.

We'll see, but my offer still stands to Paypal beer money to anyone that can find a manual trans model for me, and I actually go get it. :icon_thumby:

Let me put it this way....

Manual late model Rangers have significantly MORE issues than Automatic late model Rangers....

I have an '01 4.0L 5spd manual...and I drop the trans once a year for the slave cylinder.
