4l 4x4 auto tranny acting up

my brothers ranger started acting up a couple days ago the over drive light would come on and start flashing, he would stop the truck and turn it off and it would start up and be fine.

now when you put it in drive it wont go any where, if you put it in first it will go and then you can move it up to drive and it will go just fine

we are reallllllyyy hoping that its not going out. anything we can try to remedy this.

if the transmission were going out what can we do as far as swaps or rebuilds.

update we unhooked the battery for a few hours to try and reset the computer and clear any codes. its still doing it.

we can put in reverse back down the drive just fine when you put it in drive nothing barely any movement at all. when we put it in first then second then drive and leave it there it works fine the rest of the way. even when you come to a complete stop and start again you just have to treat it like a manual trans for that first couple shifts. any idea seals or some sort of connection hell if i know.

this happened to my pops, i know you're not going to want to hear this, but it's going to need rebuilt. It worked when he test drove it, it was all right, ride home, started acting up, about a week later, wouldn't move in any gear.. i had to drag it backwards, and there is rubber to prove it! - look around, there will be cheap deal transmission guys out there, who do it a lot neater than others.

Damn that blows. It was fine during the test drive too just started acting up 2 weeks later he'll just have to drive it till it don't move anymore haha
