While I know that this is not an uncommon issue on the RBVs, here's the issue:

Before it got cold I was having issues with the automatic hubs in that they wouldn't lock in when the xfr case indicated 4Hi or 4Lo. I got the hubs working fine and at the time wasn't having any issues with the truck going into 4wd. Everything was working fine which is how I wanted it to be prior to using it this winter.

Today we got snow and it had gotten a bit slick out.. only a few inches of snow. I thought I'd just put it into 4Hi. Well, of course it didn't work.. I got the old 6 flashes of the indicators every 2 minutes.

After pouring through the troubleshooting guides and all the other threads having to do with the flashing indicators; I checked the fuses, knowing that I changed out the motor and that everything was working last month I found a post stating the in some cases the problem was cured by disconnecting the battery, letting it sit for 15 minutes and then reconnecting. After I reconnected the battery and started the truck, the 4x4 worked without a problem. Amazing. :icon_thumby:

My '98 ranger had the same problem. All the 4x4 lights were working properly, I could hear things clicking but no engagement. Tracked the problem down to fuse #27 in the fuse panel.

my truck is doing that flashing thing its driving me up a wall i even tried taking off the shif motor and manually turned it to 4 high it still does not seem to make it kick in i think my auto hubs may be shot, ill check my fuses and try the battery thing but besides that what else can the flashing mean ?

Had a issue with my 98 ranger last year, pulled off hub cap and the end of the hub fell off.
Thinking manual hubs for sure next time.
