4-Cylinder lima Engines Know as 2.0/2.3L Ranger

I have a 1983 Ranger, almost mint, I bought it for $700 with blown/bad engine 2.0 manual. I want to rebuild it for high Horse power next year. Until thin I need a cheap replacement. Today I found a Mustang 1992 2.3L/ Automatic at a salvage yard $200 untouched, is it meant to be? anyone info please.:dunno:or:icon_thumby:

Anyone out there know the N&OUT of a swap like this?:icon_welder:

your current carb intake most likely won't bolt up to the '92 head (I don't know what pattern they used on the mustangs then), that's the only issue I can forsee right now for you, but if the head is good on the old engine (or at least rebuildable) it should bolt up to the new engine without problem.

The 83 intake will bolt up,might have to port match a little but like scott said, just use your old head if it is alright.Bolt in deal.I would get a 89-94 ranger roller cam as long as you have it apart.

Music to my ears:headbang:. I was at th savage all day, unloaded the 92 stang to my garage by 7:00. I really appreciate the info. I think Ill rebiuld old head and try the 89- cam, will my flowers work with that cam?

you have to use roller followers with a roller cam. The mustang cam might be roller but I don't know the mustang engines too well.

The years mustangs were all slider followers. As scott, said, use the roller followers.Scott,no difference in anything esle in the motors.

this exactly what i did with my 87 ranger, it was a carb 2.3, but blown, my brother had a injected 2.3 from his 92 5.0mustang swap. i used the head off my my 2.3, put it on his shortblock and used the mustangs roller cam and followers. the mustang motor should have a plug in the distributors spot, pull that out and you can run your trucks dizzy. the only real problem i ran across was the mustangs motor didn't have a fuel pump spot on the block, the boss and bolt holes are there, but the opening isn't. i don't know if you can drill out the hole and put a mechanical pump on or not, it was easier for me to just run an electric pump.

Hey Vince, its nice to no someone has done this before. Did your your block have the hole for the turbo? Tell me more about the fuel pump:beer:. Anybody know if its hard to change the cam bearings:icon_cheers:?

well i don't know, but if the oil pump/ distributor counter shaft has the fuel pump lobe on it, if does you should be able to take a fuel pump gasket, line it up with the holes on the block and mark the area you need to cut out for a mech. pump, but i didn't want to do that. just got one of the small, chepo electric pumps from the zone. it was around $40.

to be honest i never looked for the turbo drain boss, but i doubt the hole is drilled. you should be able to just drill and run the appropriate size tap in if the boss is there.

i just remembered that one of the reasons why i swapped in the mustangs cam was because the the mustang and my ranger didn't have the same type of timing belt. one was the round tooth, and the other was square tooth, but i don't remember what what I'm running right now. i know the rangers motor wasn't the original, so your belts may already be the same. plus i figured the mustangs roller cam has to be more of a performance cam than a non roller truck cam.

Cool. Yea I was thinkin of high horse and thougt a turbo would be cool. Mine has the hole pre dilled. I think yours might too.:icon_bounceblue:

the stang had the roller cam flowers. The cams in good shape Scott, thanks!:icon_surprised:

Similar to mine...2.0 > 2.3 head > blew 2.0 block > 2.3 ranger block with 91 (or something) mustang 2.3 head...

Still carbed...that's the easiest way for you right now, but if you want big HP...either turbo or 5.0...

Why play with chimps when you can have an ape under your hood...
