4.0 engine timing

I replaced the regulator... changed out the fuel filter bla bla bla. All the things we KNOW we are suposed to check. I haven't ran any injector cleaner through it... but I will tonight. As for replacing the injectors or servicing them... I believe it would be better if I just replaced them. Any specific brand I should look for (remember, this is a bone stock engine)??? I was thinking of maybe Bosch??

When you find out how much that costs, perhaps you'll try an oil change first....

Or figure out how to TEST injectors.

Wow you really can be a deuchebag. F1 is doing a fine job of getting to the root of things. Just because you suggest something doesn't mean it's the first thing he needs to check.

If you want Dennis I can borrow a Wideband and we can sample the exhaust to see if it's lean or rich. I suspect lean because of the knock. Have you checked fuel pressure?

These are all ideas to check I'm not saying your incompetent, and don't know what your doing just stabbing in the dark.

Makg... I'm quite competent when it comes to the mechanical aspect of things. First off... I may not have posted it in the beginning.. but as I'm sure you can figure out... it's a 1994. That means it's got some miles on it. With that being said... I priced out injectors... $40 bucks a piece. Doesn't make sense to screw around with cleaning and the possibility of having one that still doesn't measure up. Now, I'm gonna be getting a good scanner on this coming Thursday (Mac Mentor) and will be looking further into it as I go along. No, I'm not gonna sit here and throw cash at it till there's no more. I'm gonna figure it out.
Now, about your oil suggestion... the oil in my engine a fresh and of good quality. Synthetic oil is all well and fine. But the "quality" of lubrication is not my issue here... it's possibly an engine management problem or a fuel related problem. Oil has nothing to do with how the computer in my Explorer works or how well the injectors work.
I did get some miles on it last night (300 km or 187 mi) and noticed no difference in fuel mileage with the octane pill removed. My pinging is gone and all seems well. So that tells me that I don't have a carbon issue. It does tell me that I have one of the above mentioned problems. Either electronic management or fuel management. One thing I did notice last night was that my oil pressure seemed somewhat higher than normal last night... maybe because it wasn't working against it self... kind of makes sense when you think about it.
I'm really leaning to the injectors here... but I will wait for further testing to be done.

On a more personal note here... MAKG, I did ask for help here and I'm greatly appreciating it... But you gotta work on your people skills. Your condescending attitude to people and the "all that and a hand full of chips" attitude you have really doesn't look good. In short... stop pontificating.

Ok... so here's the deal. My problem is actually a poor circuit/open circuit for the fuel pump relay. At least that's the code I'm getting now. I'm beginning to wonder if my issue may be related to the immobilizer that we are being forced to install here or it is just a bad ground. I'll be looking into it soon.
It does make sense though... a poor connection or ground would cause a lack of fuel pressure and could also be intermittent too.

After some testing etc, I found out that my issue is a bad ground connection "between the PCM and engine". Where the hell is this connection?????? Only ones I found was the chasis to engine (braided strap) and the ones near the battery/at the battery.

Is it fuel pump monitor that causing the code? The fuel pump monitor monitors the + side of the direct power to the fuel pump to ensure that it's getting power. It's not isolated to just being a ground problem in that case.

Yesterday, I did a code scan and that was what it came up with. After scanning and tinkering a bit (playing with connections @ the battery etc), I scanned again only to get an all ok (code 111). I then cleared any codes stored in the computer. I will re-scan in a few days time and I'll have to get back to you with the code (if it comes up again). I do believe it was a 534??? Not too sure. However, I did go over my ground connections at the battery today. Snipped off and stripped down to clean copper. I then installed a new lug to connect the smaller ground wires back to the battery on the negative side.
I will do another code scan soon to make sure everything checks out. Personally, I think things are solved... only time will tell.

Ok... I'm back and after driving for some time now... the problem has come back. It was fine for quite a while! I did another code scan and came up with code 543 on the KOEO test. Says I have no connection between the PCM and fuel pump...yet the engine runs?!?!?!
I'm wondering if my problem MIGHT be from the instalation of an "INSURANCE PROVIDER MANDATED" imobilizer seeing as the imobilizer control three circuits (fuel, spark and start).

Well... seeing as it's been a few weeks, I'm guessing that nobody has an idea. In this past time, I have continued driving it and monitoring it. The issue seems to come and go with no real reason. Some days it's fine, others, no dice.Over the past few weeks, I did change my push rods as they were in need of replacement and did find it to help in the power area... but they made no difference in when the problem arises.
I ask once again... ANYONE???? ANYONE GOT AN IDEA?

I would say check all the connections on that immobilizer thing. To me it makes sense that the installation of a non factory aftermarket part would create the problem your having. Let me know how it goes.
