i have a 2004 ranger 3.0l with the 5 speed manuall tranny. i recently had the pilot bearing replaced and it shifts better then it did. i have noticed though since then sometimes the clutch pedal drops about half way to the floor before you can feel it work, like a brake pedal with air in the lines. I have talked to the mechanic who bled the system and he says they are difficult to get the air out. the clutch is new and this problem only does it about once or twice every couple weeks then works perfect after that. there are no leaks outside the master or slave cylinders so i was told it could be fluid leaking past seals inside the master or slave. if i pump the clutch pedal alot it sometimes gets better and sometimes while i drive it totally gets better and feels perfect again. The mechanic also said thoses trannies use ATF instead of the normal gear oil, i hadnt heard that before...does that sound right?

Does sidestepping the clutch once or twice fix it? I sounds like a leaky master cylinder to me... I've had that problem ever since I've had my truck (almost two years now)... occasionally I have to sidestep the clutch but other than that, no problem. Couldn't justify a $150 dollar fix on something that just costs me 5 seconds of time every now and then.

And yes they use atf.

agree 100% i was thinking the same thing. i hope there is atf in that tranny or you will destroy it

alright thanks for the info there is ATF in the tranny also. What do you mean side step the pedal?

Push it all the way to the floor and slip your foot off the side of the pedal, letting the clutch snap back into rest position.

Dunno what other people call it, but around here we call it sidestepping the clutch.

It just bleeds the air out faster than pumping it.

Don't know exactly why.

oh ok yeah i get it, ill have to try that, i took it in the shop today and they agree its most likly the master as well but it only has this issue sometimes so im just going to drive it for a while and see if anything gets worse. i dont think that will hurt anything
