Anyone know a a good place to find a 289 block? (Not looking for the 302 block, straight up 289 is what I'm looking for)

I've tried looking around a few parts places and they have plenty of sbf/bbf....but the 289 isn't listed among them, what gives?

Why do you want a 289 block ? There's very little difference between the late 289 block and the early 302's. Hi-po 289? that's a different animal, but still there are a couple of 302 castings that are similar.

get a later 302 block and throw in the 289 crank and rods=289.the 302 has a better block anyway.

there is a 64 falcon on ebay within 200 miles from here. search under salvage cars

Thanks for the lead Brian, I'll check it out.

Rick, I had an idea similar to that, take a sbf with a 4" bore, throw the 289 crank in it, and as long as I can get rods of the correct size it should work out? (also assuming the journals are the right size)

The only difference in the 289/302 are the stroke and length of the rods. Everything else is the same.

:nono: Not true. Some of the late 70's-mid 80's 302 blocks are duds.
probably still better.the 289 has short cylinders and can't be bored too far either.i wanted to put a stroker kit in my 66 289 until i found out the block won't hold it.the old stang will be getting a fox body drivetrain instead.

I did a quick look and didn't find it. If it has the stock motor still in it, it would have been the 260 with the hard to find five bolt bellhousing. For my '66' I went with a later 302 block that still had the mechanical linkage pivot point cast into the block, staying with that for the "stock" look. Even with the Performer intake and the Windsor Jr. heads, most would never know it is now a 302.

Thanks for the link, don't know what his reserve is but those parts are hard to come by, especially since it seems to be in rather good condition. Just all the front acc. brackets are worth the current bid. I had a '64' Comet Cyclone with the 289/4 speed many years ago.

In 1964, it could have had either a 260 or 289.

You can still bore & stroke a 289 block with a 347 kit. The difference in the bore length is miniscule between a 289 and 302. As for overbore capacity, both are equal.

Should have learned not to question you. My interchange book ended at the bottom with the 260 cars and then continued top of next page with the 289 and does show that both the 260 and 289 were available. I just wanted to point out that you had better be careful on what you think you have.
