289 block?

You can still bore & stroke a 289 block with a 347 kit. The difference in the bore length is miniscule between a 289 and 302. As for overbore capacity, both are equal.

289 stroke = 2.87
302 stroke = 3.0

To accomodate the additional stroke, the Ford Engineers knew it would be prudent to extend the the bottoms of the cylinders to provide more support for the Pistons while they are at BDC.

The difference in stroke is .13" That's a tad over 1/8" inch. The cylinder bores weren't extended that far. There's many who've stroked 289 blocks to 347's. As to whether it shortens the service life of the motor is a 64 milllion dollar question that'll never be answered 100% If anything the stresses imposed in racing these engines shortens the life of them more than the miniscule bore length difference. It's a non issue in comparison to what the operator does with the engine after it's built. As for your explanation in the diffferences in the block and why Ford did what they did, it didn't seem to help anyway. I've seen dozens of late 60's and early to mid 70's 302's that had missing piston skirts. So using your analogy, they didn't extend the cylinders far enough.:stirthepot:

EDIT:not recommended anyway, besides you are money ahead using a roller block

If they say it will work they must have some confidence it will stay together.

Once you get over about 400hp the stock 289/302 block likes to split down the middle anyway, so I wouldn't exactly call switching to another Ford block much more reliable if you are going to flog on it with a stroker kit.

The overbore specs in my book are the same for my 289 as a 302.

I have a 289 block in south east Missouri if you are still looking for one.

Another idea would be craigslist. I've found quite a few 289's, 302's, 351's, 390's and so on around here. All sorts of good deals on there.:icon_thumby:

Not the last time you checked what? I totally agree though on the roller block route.
i read that a 331 is the most you want to go in the 289 block a few years ago when reseaching,it must have been in mustang and fords.they've had long and short rod strokers for a while now so i could be wrong.

That is true for some, but depending on what the intended application is and how long you expect it to last is the deciding factor. You can bore and stroke the 289 block to a 352, but it may not last as long as one stroked and poked to 331.

I just talked to a guy that has a complete 289 he's selling. It's in Michigan. it comes with the small 5-bolt bellhousing and small flywheel.

I found a guy at one of the Mustang sites who is going to have three left over, he was even thinking of just scrapping them.

what to do with several 289's

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a total of 4 289's, a 64, 65, 66, and 68. I'm rebuilding the 68 for my 66 coupe because it has a 302 block and there are more options there. But the question is what to do with the other 3 289's. Is it better to sell them as is, rebuild them and sell them or put them on the trailer and haul them to scrap ? I know the last one option will make some cringe and it does me too but what can you do with extra engines ?

Do you post on that 'Stang site? if you do, ask him if he can email me and if hes interested in shipping one out here (61401)...obviously I'd pay him shipping.

I did send a messange to him but he is way out in PA. Bet I can find one here locally if you really, really want a 289. Most of us still why you are so hung up on having a 289. Nothing really magical about them unless you want a matching numbers car. I'm restoring a '66' Ranchero that came with the 289, it's saved away. Take a look at this picure and tell me what is wrong with it, not stock.

Okay, the Hi-Po headers are a give away.

Was there a Stamped Steel Heat Riser on the Header, in 'stock' form?

Ryan

With just a quick look, the exhaust manifolds are 289 Hi-po pieces and the intake is an aftermarket aluminum unit. Can't tell about the block and heads from that angle.
