289 block?

That was the whole reason for the post, it takes a sharp eye to tell the difference. The Hi-Po motor did not come with the normal heat riser, had an open element air cleaner. This is sure not correct but what I have. I has the California only air cleaner, extra nipple in the rear and several other things wrong to make it stock. But it is really easy to mask a 302 as a 289 if that's what he wants.

I'm going for 289 just for something "different". Plus I've not been paticularly impressed with most built 302's, most of them put out good numbers but sounded terrible imo. Having watched video and been witness to a few 289's.... I much prefer the sound of a hi-revving built 289.

:D OK, so tell us, what in the construction of a 289 does that different sound come from? They're both V8's. Firing order is different (depending on the cam used) but otherwise they're identical in sound output. Put a 289 next to a roller 302 both with open identical headers and you'll here the same sound coming from both. I've alway heard the 289 rev'd faster, but a full roller 302 does that too. Ditto for an 80's EFI 460.:icon_thumby:

Eh, I couldn't tell you precisely what makes the difference. All I know is that they sound different to my ears.

Find me a 302/351 that sounds like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l47-XCtu-sI
and I'll reconsider (love the high-rpm tone in that motor). So far, every 302/351 I've heard has been nothing like that. A guy I work with has a 351 in his 88 F-150, and it is absoluetly nowhere close (sounds more like its on its last leg to me....)

The 331 in my Comet sounds like it, only better. It's all in the exhaust system. Mine's Hedman long tubes, into 2-1/2" pipe, thru an X into dual 2-1/2" X 18" long Turbo Tubes. Tailpipes are 8" long angle cut straight pipe ends are either side of the 9" rear chunk. 331 in a roller block, Z303 cam, 1.7 rockers, Canfield heads, 3x2 induction, 10.4 to 1 compression ratio. I've got a cop buddy who lives a half mile from the house that can hear it every time I crank her up. I've used the Z303 and B303 and both have healthy lopey idles

Sounds like a good setup.

That brings to mind another question.... is it possible to fit longtubes in a Ranger? I'd think that they'd have to be custom made?

Yea, some of the Ranger swap headers are long tubes, like Hookers and at least one other. The Tri-Y's work well though, they were enough to work with my 331 when it was in the Ranger.

Didn't think that hooker made the ranger-swap headers anymore? Hafta to look around more... prolly just missed it.

Besides that, would a 289 or 302 hold-up better to a blower? Yeah...its not seeing much street time when I'm done with it, lol.

Don't know about availability of those headers. As for which will stand a blower better? Neither, they're equal. Only a switch to a better block (Boss 302, Dart, etc)will you see a benefit.

A 289 or early 302 would take it better than some 302's (late 70's to early 80's) In the mid 80's the 302 started getting good again, and the later ones were better qualitywise than the 289 or early 302.

LOL, IMO get a roller 5.0L and be done with it. Hell, get a earlier 90's, like a 92, they already have forged pistons from the factory. Even '93 with hypertech would be good, would be perferred for a non-boosted or non-nitrous engine because of the heat expansion rates between that and forged.. If you go w/ a 302, that's essentially what you'll end up with anyway, except save some money because you won't have to do what's already been done.

I am going with a 289 because it was free, only needs minimal work (crank turned, bearing and piston kit), and is a little bit different than most swaps but not so far off the beaten path to be a pain in the butt.

I won't be drag racing my truck so it will do fine for what I want to do.
