2021 Ford Bronco Overland

They are nice but expensive.

The RTT's seem to be pretty quick and easy to set up, too. Last week, I watched a guy in the campsite next to me set one up. He had usable shelter faster than I did. He didn't have to fiddle with getting collapsible fiberglass poles hooked to the tent and through sleeves and then attaching the rain fly. It was quick, which could be a big advantage on a rainy day. His German shepherds slept in the attached room at ground level. Poor guy had his on top of a Toyota, though.

I pop four latches, turn a crank and my accommodations just “pops” up...

Next he's gonna say he has forced air heat... running water and a kitchen. Mr. Fancy Pants.

I think RTTs have their place and work really well for some... just not sure I would have one. Many of the places I use to "camp" don't allow overnight camping... a RTT would be a dead give away.

I would rather have what @85_Ranger4x4 has. I'm trying to figure out how to get myself into an F250 or F350 with a slide-in camper before our next TRS get-together. I could use the beefier tow vehicle.

I was impressed how well you kept up with a 4.6, my brother had to put 4.10's in his to make it pull a wet kleenex. After that it pulled good but it was wound.

Great minds think alike. I really like the sounds of a Godzilla, I love how that little engine just swims in a SD engine bay.

For like real overlanding, a slide in (at least like mine) is a lot of weight for a compact truck. On the road is fine but it does effect the stability and puts more stress on the frame, suspension, axles... everything. On a rough road, it would be a lot of stress. RTT is much cheaper, lighter and easier to store.

They do make side in that are aluminum framed and much lighter/stronger now, I haven't been around one of those at all. Mine is all wood framed.

But if I get something like a '250, my slide in would be nothing to it and I could take it on many trails out west without issue. And if I wanted I could tow my Ranger behind it too (probably not on trails)

Hmm. I was thinking diesel. But it will come down to fuel economy and what can I afford and probably "what's available used".

They don't rate 3/4 tons, they all suck for mpg anyway. I am kind of over OHC engines and modern diesels are expensive money pits.

I am just dreaming but I need to do something, my supercab is getting tight.

Even the RTT raises stability and load concerns because the weight, while less than a slide in, is still high up. Like anything else, it's a compromise decision that has to be made when configuring the vehicle with the available space and the desired equipment.

Perhaps the best compromise I've seen is the vehicles 4XOverland has done on his vehicles. There are down sides to what he did.

Ronny Dahl just uses a tent that pretty much springs open when you unpack it if I understand his tent correctly.

Of course, their approaches are different because of the type of off road driving they do. Ronny likes to push things to the limit (and has been known to break things as a result). Ronny does have an off road trailer with a RTT on it for when he is camping with the family. Even then, he still runs his equipment pretty hard. 4XOverland is more of a tourer and thus more conservative in what he does. His latest land cruiser has, for all intents and purposes, a slide in but everything is still low as possible and is very minimal in many ways. He also basically ripped out the rear seats in the crew cab and installed a lot equipment in there as well. Since it's mostly just him or him and the wife or him and the daughter, it works.

I'd really prefer to win the lottery and get an Earthroamer LTI.

I liked 4x's last troopy a lot better than his current truck.

He is right at GVW and on his first trip found out he can't do what he used to be able to do because of the weight. I kinda wonder how the base truck is going to hold up with the weight/pounding.

One of those would be awesome. I've seen videos of similar machines and it is very surprising where you can get one of those things.

For what he does, I thought the Troopy was perfect. Why he got away from that is beyond me. He got it all dialed in and then sold it. To each their own and it's his money and business to do what he wishes with.

And for his channel he has to keep churning out new trucks for content too... or at least I think he thinks he has to.

Kinda cool for the viewers to so see new and different stuff as it comes out on the market too.

I think it would take a lot of likes or cups of coffee to even pay for a rusted out Subaru though let alone a decked out Land Cruiser though.
